I have an O5 Boxster S - last night i was closing the top and i heard a popping or grinding sound from the rear; the top no longer opens or closes but all the electrical parts seem to be fine - the clamshell opens and closes properly, the motor is working, the windows do the partial open and close properly. Any chance this is an easy fix?

I would check the top drive components. My guess is one of the pushrods failed
