I have just removed my starter '04 Boxster due to squealing after engine start-up it just started doing this. I noticed that you didn't actually answer the question asked in the post I've copied below.

I would like to know if taking the starter apart and cleaning and lubricating the starter engagement mechanism will be enough of a fix to last a few years, or will it start to make noise again in a few days months. You must have some feed-back information on this by now?

Regards, Rick.

PS If I've gone beyond your "comment submission guidelines" and you can't post a reply, please respond with a personal e-Mail to me.

Comments: Hi All,
No stranger to my 986's engine at this point, been getting a squeeling noise on startup that sounds similar to an earlier post. How difficult is it to re-luburicate the starter once it's out? How much damage am I causing by leaving it as is for now?

Followup from the Pelican Staff: Lubricate the drive gear? The starter would have to be removed.- Nick at Pelican Parts

I didn't understand your original question, as a starter can't be lubricated. The motor is electric and sealed bearings are used. Only the drive gear can take a small amount of grease. If making noise, the distance of the gear on stater to ring gear is too tight. Maybe wrong starter or fault unit was installed. That is, unless of course the noise is not from the starter.
