I have a 2002 Boxster. It runs well after having replaced a defective clutch installation done just before my purchase.
I have time to pick out an ideal engine for this car.
What would be the most straight forward 996, 997 or later engine for a 2002?
Also if I could buy a front end wreck, would this influence my options?

if you have a Boxster, I would grab and engine from the same era. For example, choose an engine with the same Variocam as you have, this will make the swap easier.

2000-2001 996 3.4L engine is the ideal swap for a 2000-2002 Boxster.

I second BYprovider, both engines use the same ECU therefore you will not need to worry about changing or modifying the DME harness.

Afterwards you will need to remap your OEM ECU for the 3.4L 996 mapping. Otherwise you will be leaving some performance unused.

That is incorrect, the DME will easily compensate for the additional airflow the extra 200cc's provide. Also the 996 program assumes you have the larger diameter MAF tube size that the 996 has. If the Box has it's original MAF tube size the engine will run extremely lean!
