Hi

I have a 2005 987 2.7 Tiptronic with just 10,600 miles. I absolutely hate the Tiptronic which is not only slow but problematical. I have the chance of acquiring a complete 981 3.5 litre 2013 Cayman which is being scrapped. Is it possible to fit the Cayman engine, gearbox, brakes, etc. into my 2005 987. I realise that all the Cayman ECUs will have to be used along with the wiring. I can foresee some problems with e.g.. Boxster soft top , security locks, headlamps, etc.. As I will get nothing for my 987 which was originally accident damaged, I really want to hang on to it as it is otherwise great except the terrible performance. Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Chris

I am not sure of the mounting differences, which may pose as much of a challenge as the DME and ECUS.

I opened a post in our forums. A Pelican community member may be able to answer your question.

With enough time, money, and welding equipment, anything is possible. This swap, however, is going to be a complete nightmare. The Cayman engine is a 9A1 with DFI, your Boxster is port injected and operates at a fraction of the fuel pressure required for the DFI, and the fuel system from the Cayman will not bolt into your car; you will need to fabricate a lot of stuff just to make that work. The 9A1 has entirely different engine electronics, which will require a lot of talent and electronics experience to work around. While the engine and gearbox can be adapted to fit in your chassis, you are going to need to tear the interior out of the car to install the clutch pedal, clutch hydraulics, and shifter cables. And this is just the start of what it will take.

Sometimes the view simply is not worth the climb. Sell your 2005 and purchase a running version of the 981; it will be much cheaper in the long run.
