engine problem

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I figured there are more knowledgeable people than me on this forum, so I will try. My sister has a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 6 cylinder engine. Yesterday, the car stopped in the middle of the road. When I went to help her, I tried turning on the car, but the engine just makes a ping sound, thats it. I checked the oil, and the dipstick was full of black sludge. I wiped it off and put it back in, when I removed it, there was no oil that I saw. I asked her when was the last time she changed the oil, she did not remember. Any suggestions?

sounds like the oil got baked out after running low and seized the engine. I am assuming it wouldn't turn over but sounded like the starter was hitting the flywheel?
