2004 530i transmission trouble code

I'm trying to help a friend with his 04 530i besides a bunch of OBD2 trouble codes which I will try to figure out later I'm concerned about a transmission trouble code P17EF (manufacture controlled transmission) that comes up when the car is driven. A message comes up on the display screen that warns you to drive slow and on the dash a red gear image comes up with an explanation point. Its an automatic trans. any help would be greatly appreciated.
