Mine is a 2003 non-S model. Is it gonna be okay if I use the updated filter with internal plastic support if I accidentally lost the plastic cage and spring?

You should be OK, as long as it has the updated filter. I think MINI n o longer sells your style filter housing lid, if you needed a replacement you would receive the aluminum style lid.
