In a 2007 Cooper S, there's a constant and uniform resistance to movement of the gear lever stick throughout it's range of movement. The movement is smooth but it feels as if you are forcing it to move through extremely thick grease. This includes any side to side movement of the gear lever while in neutral and engine running or not. There is no feel of where the various gears are and you are left to guess the approximate position for each gear but once you do find a gear, the box accepts the shift without issue. No other symptoms are apparent. Sorry but we have no other history on this car.

Try detaching the shift cables, does the shifter move freely?
