i have just paid $1500 for work on the 2004 mini cooper s. harmonic balancer and alternator belt was replaced i am told. i feel sick..... should i? does it cost this much for this repair?

I am not sure what the repair will cost in your area. Call a few shops and ask for a quote. Could be right on mark.

Did you get this work done at a dealer or at a MINI independent shop?
These MINI's do cost a bit to maintain, but if you DIY most repairs it will be much cheaper and will help keep money in your pocket. Harmonic balancer part - $286: 2004 Mini Cooper S Hatchback - Engine Miscellaneous - Page 1 Pulley puller tool - $150: 2004 Mini Cooper S Hatchback - Tools - Page 11 (you can also borrow or sometimes rent this tool from somewhere) Having the correct tools for the job make it much easier.
