Hi Nick, I've disassembled the pump, cleaned it and put it back together and put it in the car. The steering is completely hard and the pump makes a strange noise not the typical noise but as if spinning in a vacuum, do you have any idea what it might be?

The pump is likely faulty. You can try having it rebuilt or replace it. Give The Pelican Parts parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799. They can figure out what part or repair kit you need.

Why did you disassemble and clean it in the first place? Were you having issues with it before? Definitely may be faulty and time to replace it. You can also call your local dealer to see if your MINI qualifies for the extended warranty on the P/S pumps. Check your P/S fan too to make sure that it's not seized/faulty.
