Bad running 2010 Mini Turbo S N14
I have a 2010 S turbo, with codes, P1338, ox296A...Code P0128 Ox2f07......and lastly Code P1297 Ox2885....Low and loaping idle, stalls out....will not accelerate, even with full throttle applied....then sometimes will run at highways speeds, still notice low output. Changed all top sensors including camshaft sensor, but not MAP sensor...Pulled intake and media blasted intakes, one and four was carboned up enough....all cleaned and perfect...still wont run...checked vacuum pump...BOV, all functional and intact..check vacuum lines...I hear turbo spool up now, didnt before, but hear that burp sound at 4k
One other thing of notice, on cold start, almost immediately high temp fan starts...and shutdown, have to pull relay for a while not to drain battery...replaced CTS already |

Hello! Assuming your N14 is an R56?
P1338 0x296A Camshaft Position Sensor Rationality Check (Inlet - Outlet) P1297 0x2885 Boost Pressure Control Boost Pressure Too Low P0128 0x2F07 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature) If you replaced the CTS sensor I would move to the thermostat. When was the last time you replaced the thermostat? How many miles are on your MINI? A fault code can be present yet the vehicle will lack any cooling system issues, such as overheating. MINI Cooper R56 Turbocharged Engine Thermostat Replacement (2007-2011) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article You have the same 3 codes that this individual did on our forum, but he didn't report back with his findings. However, I posted some information that may be useful to you as well. Check it out here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-mini/940776-p1338-p0128-p1297-poor-performance.html. Let me know what you find out. |

TY, for our quick reply....Over the weekend, I Mediablasted the intakes and intake valve...mild to moderate carboned valves, mostly noted on Cylinder 1 and Cylinder 4. In regards to to the thermostat that was changed two years ago...shortly afterwards small symptoms started showing up...two weeks ago changed CTS, no change....High temp fan comes on after three or four minutes, and really doesn't want to go off...I usually pull relay....Have a app, with a EMI scanner (cheap)....shows that coolant is at -40F...
Now car idles with a lopping... and now wants to stall....I can put full throttle and car will not move..will not come off idle....after cleaning i pulled P0300 through P0304....reset and those codes have not reappeared. Old codes that I originally provided you, have not reappeared...Those codes was through a well known mechanics shop...the new ones off my little app. |

in addition, plugs were replaced within four thousand miles. replaced turbo sensor, 134, and then the part ending 135 (Bosch) check BOV valve...Check vacuum,
CAR MILEAGE 94K Also, the little app. showed fuel pressure rail at 1200. did not seem to fluculate too much....even with the lopping of idle..also cleaned MAP Sensor. as I noted before, the high temp fan comes on, even with the reading of -40 degrees.... |

You have faults for boost actuation, could be a faulty turbocharger, sensor or duct leak. Also the camshaft code, I would test the signal, is it getting to the DME?

I've seen thermostats go bad 2 years after replaced so don't rule it out as an issue. Obvious question, but I must ask, have you checked your coolant level? Make sure it's not low. Sorry... so you did a carbon clean up and afterwards you pulled the misfire codes (P0300 and P0304) and cleared them and since (P1338, P1297, P0128, P0300, P0304) have not occurred again? Are there any codes present in the system now?
I'd still test your wastegate: Mini R56 Testing the Engine Turbocharger Wastegate | R56 Cooper S Hatchback (2007-2013), R56 Cooper JCW Hatchback (2009-2013) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article. |

mini update
Here's a little further investigation, follow up on the mini, down on power....I've pulled the valve cover and inspected the valve train, and initial inspection of timing chain...all looks well up front...no visible damage, chain appears tight...but, left plugs in and rotated engine manually and after compression stroke, this is what the chain looked like....

If photo does not come through, the midline of the chain drops from upper retainer by a half an inch....also of note.....chain feels smooth, no sharp edges, nor do the camshaft gears....feel good and dont show wear or abuse.

Getting progress...Mini
Finally finished up putting new timing chain, and tensioner into the Mini...Sure is a lot of work....OF NOTE NICK>>>>the pretensioner on the serpentine belt interferes with removing one of the timing cassette bolts, a little FIY if you remove the ten oclock and five oclock bolts, and loosing up the two oclock you can swing the part out of the way enough to complete the task...and avoids trying get everything lined up again in such a small area.
Car runs better, however, pull one code of P0138 (unknown code), and dashboard stored err as follows: 9314H 20292D177600 A3ACH 200034769008 931DH 200047EAB00 931BH 61444A7C7B00 Thanks for your parts service, thanks for your advise...if anywhere I can find what these codes mean, I'd appreciate Dr. Jack |

Once you installed the new timing components did you clear the DME of all faults and then get these codes? Make sure you clear the codes and wait to see what comes back if you did not already.
P0138 0x2A7C O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2) If the above code does come back, it points to a possibly faulty oxygen sensor. I would replace it and go from there. This article will help: MINI Cooper R56 Turbocharged Engine Oxygen Sensor Replacement (2007-2011) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article. Report back with your findings. If you have questions for Nick, comment at the bottom of the article and he will respond to you there. He doesn't respond in our forums. |
