does the new knock sensor have to face a specific direction? I read somewhere else that it was Subaru only that does it, but I want to confirm

They have the face how they came out, for wiring orientation and proper clearance.

Figure #7 in the article will show you its orientation, but before you remove yours be sure to mark what side was facing you before you remove to determine how to install the new one.
