future dog replacement

So here's our story my wife and I currently have three Daschunds and they are 16/16 and 13 years old so the rainbow bridge is not too far off in the distance . The 13 year old is partially paralyzed in the rear legs we did surgery and therapy but it didn't work . So looking to the future we are thinking about the next dog ( singular ! ) being a middle sized dog . We now live in the country on 2.5 acres and would like a dog with decent manners but still bark/growl when strangers show up . We have three grandchildren that are still young ( 12 and under ) so we don't need a child killing breed My wife and I have been married 40 years and in the past have had a Springer Spaniel , a beagle , a lab and daschunds and have enjoyed them all .

We want to stay away from breeds that need professional grooming so a Springer is out . And we think we want to stay smaller than a lab but we " might " consider a German Shepard or Doberman but probably want smaller than that . For 99 % of the time the dog will interface with just me and my wife . So what breeds would you recommend we consider ? We will do everything we can to rescue the dog from a local shelter but would like to have a few breeds in mind when we go looking , it's too easy to fall in love with all of them Thanks in advance for your suggestions .

I'm in the same position. Tank is 11 now with cancer and a torn AC. We will be downsizing and doing some RV travel, so a smaller dog is a must.

Since you have the property, a Vizsla is an excellent choice and fits all your requirements. They are excellent with children, very low maintenance, and will bark at strangers, but are not guard dogs.

Same. Just lost our beloved lab. Want smaller and less shedding with the wonderfulness that is a lab.

After we lost our Golden, we decided a dog with a bit less energy might be a better choice for us now that we’re getting older and kids not around very often.

Since you know and love Dachshund’s...we went a similar way, and at 5 months of age, it’s like having a cartoon character living in our house. No way to be in a bad mood with Alfie around. One of the best Basset breeders in the country is nearby in Toccoa, GA....Huff’s Hounds. Just a thought:

We adopted a mini schnauzer from a rescue organization just over 9 years ago. Hair, not fur, so no shedding! She’s ok with kids. It would’ve been pretty hard for us to tell what she’d be like with kids when we first adopted her. Completely terrified of people. She’s really come along well over the years. I’ve heard that they can be anywhere from great or bad with kids, so YMMV. Good luck.

I need a little oomph in my dogs.

Our Heeler is 14, in amazing shape but she is on the last few years. My wife will not own another breed of dog after 14 years with the Heeler.

That said, all dogs are cool.

Chiweenie: Dachshund/Chilhuahua mix......doesn't have that the long back that lead to physicals problems of the aging Dachshund.......

I didn't adopt Dexter. He ran away from home and adapted me. Owners are busy and often not home.......Lovely dog.

You state that you want a dog that barks, that would essentially eliminate the Doberman.

Five of my dogs have been rescued boxers, they will bark, they are medium sized and generally pretty friendly.

My advice would be to hang around a few dogs and observe their personalities and behaviors first hand.

Another recommendation for a heeler. But I would advise adopting an adult dog so that you can skip the crazy evil phase.

When did it become so hard to adopt a dog? I just got rejected after trying to adopt a nine year old heeler long distance. I had to prove Home ownership, list my employer, give three references including my vet and was somehow still turned down.

I have finally been authorized by the CIC to get another dog, we lost our family Gordon Setter last February at 13. He was exactly what we needed, and so we are in line for another Gordon. This one will be my 3rd Gordon. In my opinion, they're as fine breed as you can get. Loyal, calm (until in the field) protective, big enough to be scary to non-dog people and not too difficult to groom unless you show them.

One of the 10 pups, a female, will be ours at the end of January. Dozer (dad) and Ember shown too.

I'd just go to wherever you are going to adopt it and see which one has the "take me home look".

Some great suggestions and comments. A Bassett hound is a consideration but have concerns about back issues and the slobber . A boxer is a breed we had not considered but will now . Vizla is another good one . Ultimately we will head to the local shelters and find the one that wants to come home with us .

Or a Dutch Shepherd, one on the R is a Dutch Shepherd/something huge mix

Be advised, a Vizla or either of the two above are high energy dogs that want exercise/a J O B to keep them occupied.

Heeler or Cattle Dog is tough to beat.

Lost our old English bulldog to cancer early last summer. Got am English Staffordshire Bull Terrier in July. She’s very smart, on the small side, about 40 lbs., 28-30 inches long, short hair. Energetic and very friendly. We ‘re getting older, always had large breed dogs, time to downsize. Took awhile to find a breeder as they aren’t plentiful stateside. SSo far, so good.
