917/10 replica on craigslist

Something you don't see every day.
I'm thinking a warmed up 3.6 with MFI would be sweeet in that thing.

It is spring time and every car person has an itch to get out there and drive. Autocross, Hillclimb, Track Day, Car Show! My car is done and ready for a new owner to take it to the next level. I designed, engineered, fabricated and built the car myself.

The car has two Porsche designed Subaru EZ30 six cylinder engines that were connected at the crank shaft and I had them running. The machine shop I used for the connector made one part out of balance so I disconnected them and have the car running and driving on the rear engine. The fuel, coolant and exhaust systems are still connected for both engines. The new owner would have to create a new connector using a BMW driveline "Donut" and install another Megasquirt computer for the front engine although the present computer may be able to run both engines.

The car has Corvette C6 suspension and brakes, a Tilton pedal assembly, ATL fuel cell, Aeromotive fuel pump and filter, braided steel fuel lines, Porsche 911 steering system, QA1 coilovers, Michelin tires, a custom tuned exhaust system, Porsche RSR taillights, decals as the car was raced at Watkin's Glen in 1971, a Vintage and Period Correct MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, tubular steel replica frame, and VDO gauges for both engines.

This is the Only Porsche 917/10 replica in the world that I know of. It is the Only 12 cylinder boxer engine 917 replica in the world that I know of. I have run out of money, energy and technical ability to take the car to the Next Level so I will leave that up to the next owner. I will be looking for the best offer Over $60,000. The original car which has only a few pieces from the original car, recently sold for around $3,000,000!

Pretty cool build. Too bad he never got it running on all 12. It doesn’t sound insurmountable to do so either... I wonder if this is turbocharged or just NA...

Wow, that thread started ok and then went south quick.
reminds me of a long time ago when i cobbled up a turbo system on a 914 from junkyard parts with simplicity and budget in mind. I had lots of critics telling me how I SHOULD
have done it, but my response was that I drove it all over last weekend and had a blast.

Lots of people had all sorts of reasons why my RX7 oil cooler wouldn’t work on my 911 race car... that was 10 years ago and thousands of laps that I installed it.

He is looking for offers over $60k. For a "12 cylinder" of which only half work. Because the coupler wasn't balanced ...

I could not build something like that, so respect for that. But the guy must be high, thinking anyone would want to spend more than a few grand on this abandoned project that likely has zero documentation coming with how it is put together.

He should put it on BAT!

I would roll it up on Ebay with no reserve and take the hit.

Kudos to the guy. The other thread reminds me of when Chris Runge came here years ago to talk about his Frankfurt Flyer idea and initial steps, and everybody blasted him. Well, the checkbook mechanics did.

I think it's very cool!

And I don't think the asking price of $60K and up is out of line all things considered.

Wish there was a video from driver's seat perspective while on the track.

He dumped a LOT of money into that car, so on the one hand I feel sorry for him, doing so much work then not being in a position to finish it.

On the other hand, I find it humorous that he was so pompous when he posted, but somehow ran out of technical ability....

Funny that neither afterburn or javamutt haven’t posted in this thread.

Both were pretty active in the other thread and it nearly came to internet fisticuffs...

I’m with java on this, too bad the builder didn’t pay better attention to the details and level of workmanship, this project could have turned out much better and he would be in a better position to sell it for $60,000... as it sits, I’d be amazed to see it get 1/10th that die to the incompleteness and poor workmanship on the body which is a red flag to the build quality iron the rest of it.

I was wondering about this half asleep the other day. Was this discussed earlier elsewhere:

Is this "connecting two engines" commonly done? I know it was done on the original 12 cylinder Porsche but at a much higher level, with a proper case, crank, valve train etc. and sharing the 6 cylinder components where possible. The modular build of the air cooled flat 6 really helped with this.

The challenge I see is that you are looking at two engines with the same valve timing, meaning you are going to have two cylinders fire at the same time unless you change the timing to a proper V12 firing order which I guess would require the cams to run at half speed and with a custom grind. Do you know if that was done here? I guess not, otherwise it couldn't run on a single engine now. Edit: and how about the piston timing?

On a related note, do we know how two connected engines behave in terms of harmonics? It is possible that the connector mentioned being out of balance is just fine but you are introducing harmonics across the two cranks ...

IMHO anyone who has the ability to fix this mess would rather build something like this from scratch. I find it a weird project, such as really wanting it to be a 12 cylinder but then setting it up with a water cooled pair of subie engines. Eccentric ...
