Porsche Cayman (987) Over Rev Report
My father is looking at purchasing a 987 Cayman. It is well equipped with a few neat options such as the sport chrono package, PASM, etc.
This car is owned by a PCA enthusiast. The current owner bought the car from a dealer a few years ago. It is a gorgeous car and it looks like it was well cared for. My father decided to have a Porsche Dealer do a PPI and he asked them to pull an over rev report on it. This is what it shows. Range 1: 1535 Range 2: 306 Range 3: 220 Range 4: 81 Range 5: 0 Range 6: 0 That range 4 reading scares me a little bit. It looks like it hit the Range 3 & 4 about ~2,700 miles ago (78 hours ago) I don't know what to think about this. The dealer told him that it was not a big deal and it was a beautiful car. The previous owner claimed he never tracked it. This is my fathers fun "retirement car" (he definitely deserves it). What does the brain trust think? |

What do those ranges mean? Levels above the redline?

The way I understand it, it might be possible to hit range 1 & 2 by bumping it on the rev limiter. It seems like anything past that, someone must have missed a shift. I think these are the proper values for each range.
Range 1 7200-7500 Range 2 7500-7700 Range 3 7700-7900 Range 4 7900-8400 Range 5 9400-9500 Range 6 9500+ |

RedBaron is pretty much on the dot for the ranges.
You'll want to check this out: Cayman Technical Data

I believe those figures are for individual ignitions cycles not "number of occurrences". So, it's probably not a major concern, and I'd personally want to have some sort of warranty in place on a used 987 anyway (CPO or aftermarket).
That said, I'd probably still pass, as there is a veritable sea of Caymans for sale out there. If it's not a manual S-car, I'd pass regardless, but that's just me...YMMV. |

PNA will not CPO a car with overrevs above 3.If it does has an existing CPO, PNA will not cover many items due to the overrev.... .ask me how I know!! So many great cars out there- why not buy a car with a clean report? This will always be a red flag should you decide to sell in the future. |

as I side note- my car was heavly tracked for 5 years- I have under 200 range 1 overrevs, 35 in range 3. nothing in range 4+
I love when someone says Owned by a PCA member as If that realy means anything. Why not say owned by someone who didn't know how to drive the car or just beat the crap out of it because it was leased and knew he was dumping it back on the stealership. At 7000+ RPM it does not take long for 220 ignitions. I didnt do the math but it would be a few seconds I think. Thats not what I would consider a big thing.

It would be helpful if the OP told us what year and what motor. I assume that may make a difference in the computer based rev limit.

I'm assuming this is not a PDK car?

For fun, I did the math. I get 0.564 seconds to accumulate 220 ignitions at 7800 rpm.
I agree - Find a different car. |

It's definitely reason for pause. Most newer Porsches have range 1-3, 4 and on is more rare and is a missed shift. Unless it's a really special car, I would pass. Sport Chrono isn't that hard to find in a Cayman, PASM is a little harder. There are a lot of them out there.
