Are Porsche owners contrarians?
We already know that members of the Arcane Car Club are. And the Cyclops Car Club, etc. But what about Porsche? I think so. I know I am.
So many of you guys dismiss sports fandom as a waste of time. And you really can't abide anything having to do with pop culture or any aspect of Hollywood. I'm not saying this is bad. Just an observation. Porsches are a little weird. Engine in back. Rear wheel drive. Air-cooled (Well, they use to be, anyway). A normal American (or Swedish?) man would be into American muscle cars. I bet no one dismisses sports on those websites.

Having grown up and still living in a university town where SEC football is BIG... I never care about sports either.
Really opened my eyes when I was creating fake student accounts for 2 types of UF students to take remedial courses (basic reading, writing, grammar, and math) here at "the other college in town" - half the students would be on the fall football roster, the other half were Chinese and Indian immigrants/international students who were coming in to work on masters or doctorates. And the Chinese/Indians were NEVER in the remedial math classes.... |

I am not either!
Yea, the "sports" or really the games that people like to watch are something I just don't get. What is so exciting about watching other people play a game. They even televise people playing cards, people playing ping pong or tennis. Other people playing with balls of every size and shape is just boring to me. Even if if it the two best folks on the planet playing against each other, it is just a game. I don't mind other people paying to watch it, just leave me out of it. There was a recent cool thread with Paul McCartney driving around in his old neighborhood and singing in the car with some dude I have never heard of. Yes really. I sent the link to my wife and said this is some guy driving around with Paul McCartney and she rolled her eyes and of course she know he was was. If you held a gun to my head now and said name that guy singing with Paul, I would tell the gunman he will have to shoot me, because I don't know him.

I don't watch sports. I prefer to get out and do something, even just standing in the garage and daydreaming about some project, is better for than me watching sports. I can stand and stare at how a wheel fills out a fender for hours. Not so with sports.
I ride bikes- many times on group rides, fellow riders will pull up next to me and ask me what I thought of the latest tour de giro or whatever. "Pantini was on killing it today" etc. and I am clueless. I have no idea who these cycling heroes are and it's supposed to be "my" sport. I try to establish that I don't follow sports, and everyone forgets and then the whole process starts over again. Maybe some brief winter olympics stuff, but that's about it. The whole thanksgiving/football thing drives me crazy. After an early afternoon dinner, I'd prefer to stand outside in the cold and listen to an occasional crow caw than watch football. Or any other sport. (old man yells at clouds...) Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 07-03-2018 at 07:47 AM.. |

Sports? No, I don't watch sports on TV. I usually don't know who's in the superbowl or the world series or final four or whatever until i hear it mentioned enough for it to imprint on my brain. I've watched sports in the past but mostly as a social thing because that's what everyone else was doing.
I'd be most likely to watch some sort of motorsports on TV if I had the spare time and the stuff that I wanted to watch was easily available.

Never got sports. Im slightly eccentric , or at least I was for a good portion of my adult life.
I guess, I always gravitated towards non mainstream music, and entertainment. I've become just another normal run of the mill schlub with time passing though. The first time I looked down at a flat six with mechanical injection stacks, I knew I was done playing with american v8's .

I am clearly a contrarian. No TV. Don't care about organized sports.
I interact with a lot of people for work and because I am a raging extrovert. I get some strange looks when I talk about real things. The fact that I can't name the Kardashians, reference reality TV, or similar makes me a little bit odd. I would not have it any other way. Our time is short. Do what you value. |

Sometimes I recognize I do things to be contrary, but often it is simply a drive to find a better way. How will improvement be reached by repeating what everyone does?
Then there are times to go with the flow, like driving in the lanes of traffic devoted to your direction. I do have a tendency to want to "unsettle" people in order to get them from a static position with no chance of bettering themselves, and into a mobile position where their minds have to work and process. One time I gave a $20 to a casheer, he gave me several one dollar bills, several coins, a bag with groceries, etc... I asked him, have you ever thought that this is an uneven exchange; I gave you one piece of paper, you gave me several pieces of paper, several coins, as well as all this food. It blew his mind, he was now thinking about something he'd never thought to question. When it comes to music there are certain post editing techniques that listening to that music bothers me. Because of this most modern music I listen to is off the beaten path where these techniques are not as obvious. Sound guys are sound guys, and will be up to date on things; just some take the tools and apply them in a way I enjoy more than others.

Sports...college baseball is great stuff. But baseball my favorite game during childhood, despite never being good at it. The College World series..I wasn't alone here in liking that.
But generally, I'd rather watch a you tube video of top level pool players over most television sports. So, how contrarian is that? I'm pretty alone here in liking that. Probably because I know the game well enough to really appreciate the skills used by the top players, and the hours of work put in to get those skills. Porsches? Been there-done that. Pretty much the same as any other car clique.

According to my Grandfather and Dad, "Sports is a big waste of time, when you can be doing something useful and or productive." That sentiment has been passed unto myself.
I have no addiction to the opiate of being engrossed in a factitious endeavor whose purpose is meant to sell you something and to distract you from reality. Give them bread and circus to satiate their blood-lust lest they come after the elites of society.

My business partner is much like me in a complete lack of appreciation of organized "sports" but he is smart enough to understand social interactions. He was invited to a minor league baseball game on a beautiful day and went with his parents and his daughter. It was nice to be out together. Someone called him and asked him what is the score? His reply was classic, I have absolutely no clue. The scoreboard has numbers all over the place and the only thing that makes sense is the clock that displays the time of day next to the scoreboard.

Though I was just an average athlete, I spent countless hours playing sports as a youngin'. I enjoy watching football and just a bit of b-ball....I just love the game itself....hard to explain. I don't watch movies...different strokes...

Being a contrarian means that you can stand back after many years of Porsche enthusiasm, ownership, addiction, adulation of all things air cooled (including spoons, which a lot of you do just because you like good machinery) and then one day say, "Fug it, it takes too much time and money" to stand in one parking lot after another with the brood. Or breed, as it were.

With this single well intentioned (but sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo completely off the mark of why I like p-cars) suggestion, I thanked the salesperson for his time, turned around, drove home and bought the white sc on the spot, and haven't quit smiling since. Call me a p-car collector contrarian (and sports fan contrarian- not that there is anything wrong with sports fandom)- this as my best friend and his wife are happy beyond belief about some recent ice hockey victories! Im certainly a contrarian. My taste in cars is far out of the mainstream for sure but although I strive to be different my cars are some of the most iconic and well known (even though so many people still dont know what they are). I have old Willys Jeeps , Porsches and a classic Mini. I dont know why that is.

Yeah, I'm a contrarian. I usually get what I want whether I think anyone else will like it or not, but I could find myself not getting something if it was VERY common unless I just really loved it.
