If you get too cold you can warm things up by throwing the toaster in the bathtub.

Hugh,
I know you said it's a home warranty thing but if you want to see what's going on, just turn the fan switch on your thermostat to on and see if the indoor fan comes on. If it does, your problem is outside, not inside. |

Great pic, all you need is a blue tarp and its golden.
![]() Hope you get your AC fixed soon. Mine needed a new capacitor last week. Of course I thought I should order a spare when I moved here a few years ago. Thats what I get. |

If the freezer that made the ice is inside your house, you will actually increase the heat load in your house by conservation of energy and all that mumbo-jumbo. The freezer has to suck the energy out of the water to make Ice and it rejects it + inefficiencies out the condenser in the back.
Window unit is nice to have around. It is amazing they can be made and retailed for so cheap. I think they were about $800 when I was in college in the early 90s

Hugh,
I can't help but be reminded of the proverb "necessity is the mother of invention" when looking at your first picture and then your pic of the A/C unit installed. |

Call Mike Miller, he's the best HVAC guy in SCV. Honest and will try his best to make it out the day you call. (661)621-1056. Everyone I've referred him to loves him. One of the most honest contractors I've done business with.

Thanks, Milt. So that's the outside door that is opened wide enough for the AC to fit and the handle in the pic is part of the inside door, I guess.

Patio slider with a dog door insert.
It cools enough that I can live with it until tomorrow.

if you want to try to fix it:
is air coming out of the vents inside. try setting the Tstat to fan and see if it comes on. is the outside fan running does it sound like the comp is running.

Fan motor, tech said it costs about $500, the home warranty the realtor paid only cost me $75, plus about $150 for the temporary window/patio slider A/C unit which I’ll keep for emergency use for me and friends.

Now that it sort of works, looking at tuning it up. Laser thermometer says 49 to 60 degrees on vent temps upstairs and down. Hosed down the outside unit fins, not much help. A friend of my sons who does A/C work is gong to stop by next week to check pressures, etc. I’ll pay him, may look into newer better attic duct work with a much higher “R” value, The place is 30 years old.

Here is a basic Internet article that explains some of the things you want to measure to figure out what's going on:

if you can get to your inside unit easily you can remove the side panel and spray some coil cleaner on the coil. get the stuff for the evap or one that does not need to be rinsed off.
make sure your filters are clean. just goto the local HVAC shop. nice link above. I hope 500 is parts and labor. make sure he replace the motor and not just a capacitor or contactor.
