the ramblings of a man that just got back from Mexico fishing.

what a trip!!!

I went in and booked the trip telling myself, "no way the Cartels jack with us". well, I was partially correct. the company I booked with host trips at two different lakes. the one I wanted was booked solid (bigger bass) so I accepted plan-B. a newer lake with smaller fish. at the airport, our handlers whisked us into a van, and off we went thru the country side. no issues. at the lake, I was shocked. it was crowded!! we got set up in overflow housing. nice but it took a bumpy van drive to get us to/from the main lodge/dining hall to our huts. I asked. apparently the Cartels got frisky at the other lake and there was automatic rifle fires, and what the other guest described as, "I think they were throwing grenades at each other". all the guest were loaded up, and they all came to my plan-B. they even brought more boats.

I met some nice people from all over. I met some racist morons as well. hahah.. the best service ever. the staff hustled like nothing I have ever seen. I did okay with my Spanish, thanks to my HS school teacher, Mr. Gonzalez.

the trip reaffirmed the importance of dietary fiber. I forget my fiber supplements, plus packing a powder seem like a fools errand. I had to toss my bag of dried prunes at the Mexican airport. I was crunching on carrots like my life depended on it. the chef, kept them coming..and apples. I think I made up for the alcohol I didnt drink from the open bar. . that and the case of Topo Chicos I drank.

the other lake remains closed to tourist. and our booking for next year is up in the air. we are newbies, and dont get the preferred treatment MEMBERS get. but I will be back there next January.

I didnt get my big bass. I lost her twice. but what a blast! and my buds C-Pap machine was weird!! thankfully I put in earplugs. I was the only person that brought a PFD. and I wore it..I made a promise to someone.

oh, the boats are small. two guys got too close and managed to bury a hook into one's back. they unknowingly clipped it too short. we tried different pliers and we couldn't get it loose. nuts!! I told the guy. "I dont know you, so I am going to go at it hard". he let me. the human skin on the back is THICK! he went to a local dude and had it cut out. I did ask if it was a veterinarian. haha.

Sounds like a hell of a trip Cliff! Congrats on not being hooked, shot, or blown up (or drowned, thanks to your handy dandy PFD)!

Sadly, if you want to be around people, you're almost guaranteed to meet morons although I've never understood racists (that's a special breed of stupid), some more harmless than others.

Hmm, comparing that fish to your body in the photo, it must be at least 33-36" long right?

Nice. And I'm pleased you survived it LOL

Next you'll have to come to New Zealand and go trout fishing in Lake Taupo.

Glad you had a great time.

I fished Lake Guerrero in the early 80's. Many "Grande" fish.

Also, great white wing dove hunting.

It's all about how far you hold it away from yourself. That's really a minnow.

Actually... You guys can stay . In fact I'd love to have you to stay. You may end up with one of the dogs sneaking onto your bed in the middle of the night. But other than that life is easy out here in the pacific islands.

Glad you had fun and were safe.

I had a client manufacturing location down there where we could not go on the north side road of the property at night as it was a known Cartel route.

Is it worth the cost? I'm not sure if Mexico fishing is cheap. I know every time I price a guided trip I realize I take my own boat out 10 time for the same money.

If I was going to fish bass I've got Castaic and Pyramid both close, within 20 minutes.

But I do like Mexico for saltwater, especially Sea Of Cortez. Great Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and Wahoo. I've stayed at Rancho Buenavista a few times and Playa Del Sol. Always a good time, Buenavista is a bit more old school, John Wayne and others used to stay there...
