This is worth posting again, about people of a certain age and how they react to being in the workforce. Also a cool talk about addiction to your phone.

I don't know if it applies as much to the trades but it's cool anyway.

There is a shortage of decent workers because just about everyone who wants to work and is worth a darn already has a job.
Paying more isn't going to change that.

If we stopped subsidizing the loosers, maybe we would more people who were employable.

Problem is not wages, it is lazy, entitled work force

The root issue is that you get what you pay for, and that includes employees.

Retail sucks; trades can suck. Dependable employees get dumped on. No one seems to pay enough to keep the quality of employee around they desire. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a help wanted ad and thought: "if someone existed with all of those qualifications, they sure as hell wouldn't be working for you at that low pay".

I honestly think most stores like Advance would be better served by paying 7 competent employees well, maybe 3-4 working at any given time, instead of having 20 incompetent to barely competent employees.

I think wage pressure is building, which unfortunately will be followed by inflation.

Another problem is, what do we do with all of the incompetent people, as a society?

One of the issue is that they ALL think they are worth 15-20 bucks an hour and its their God given right to have that damn phone on their hands 24/7

This is terrifying. It used to be 10%, but now it is higher.

Somehow with all of my cancer treatments/heart issues/car accidents/related blood clots/kidney, and dental issues, I still show up to work every day, and work harder than most. In my "spare" time, I run a farm with alot of difficult problem solving projects, and hands on labor. To get any help from younger people is like asking to pull teeth, because they just don't want to soil thier hands, or actually use the muscles, and energy that God gave them.

I've worked my azz off my entire life, usually collapsing in bed exhausted, but content with the knowledge of everything I accomplished that day.

I think colleges are teaching creativity more than skills, and giving students a false sense of a rosy future with flowing wine, and rose petals, with no manual labor, or expended effort. No real life skills are being taught in High school or college, which now, has come back to bite us.

Cell phones will be the undoing of this country. They won't look at a sunset without taking a damn selfie, or roast a fricking marshmallow without checking thier status. To look through Facebook pages of the younger people is tiring. All I see are different angles of the same face, at arm's length in different poses wearing different makeup, and clothes. This truly speaks to the self indulgence/self love of a society that lives in houses of mirrors.

My company has fired several who just couldn't stay off line during work hours, and checking thier emails/texts/snapchats/twitter/social media status during meetings, or out on the production floor (safety issue).

We are in healthcare and pay above the mean and still have a hard time getting people willing to work. Then again, you shouldn't expect $30/hr as a dietary aide.

It isn't the pay in our area, it is people that don't want to put in a days work 5 days a week. They want to show up when they feel like it and do the work they want to do and nothing more.

I took a trip last month and after getting through security at the airport, realized I had left my smart phone in my son's car when he dropped me off.
I thought about it and said, what the heck. I don't need it that bad.

Not having it caused some inconveniences because our world is designed around them, but it was nothing I couldn't deal with. i had to stop and ask directions once, I had to call and get directions another time.
I didn't have written proof the car rental company was lying to me.
Other than that, I did just fine without a phone in my hand for that week. Even when traveling to another state I was OK without it. On a regular day to day I would be even better without it, but the company requires i carry it and they pay for it.

If they didn't I'd still have a $15 flip phone.

I bet most of our younger generations could not say that.

welfare contributes to it in that it raises the pay needed to get a lazy ***** off her ass and showing up at work.

About 6 years ago I read that those with unemployment insurance running out could claim some form of debilitation, such as depression, and receive disability insurance.
And just keep on going.

I think the reflected sentiment posted on this Thread provides the verification for the veracity of the above statement. I guess what the author of the above statement is saying is, that you will suck it up and do what you have to do if you are hungry. You will not worry about making an "impact on the world."

Another thing about "impatience". or instant gratification. In August of 1945 the world changed forever. With the dropping of the A bomb mankind had developed a means to wipe himself out in an instant. Living with that threat has overturned the concept of delayed gratification at all levels, in that why wait we might not be here tomorrow.

While I like Mr Sinek's take, his take doesn't take into account how we got into this fine mess in the first place. His views are rather superficial because he doesn't go deeper into the baseline of human nature. There are universal concepts in play where he only looks at what effects millennials. Human nature has not changed only the mindsets.

Don't forget about those in the ruling class promising universal income! City's of Chicago and Stockton are launching experimental programs.
And everywhere in this country company's are looking for help! How does one justify these programs?

I think this is an important factor in this conversation. When I'm out & about during the week, I see lots of scruffy-looking people who seem to be just hanging out in the middle of the day and killing time. And they really don't look like the type of folks you might see working evenings/nights in retail or in restaurants either. If you're willing to just scrape by day-to-day, it's very easy to avoid working any sort of traditional job in this country.
A friend's daughter is one of these types. In her early 20s, she decided that the working world wasn't for her, so she found some dumbass loser to get her pregnant. Once the baby came along, she ditched the boyfriend, went on welfare, then signed up for every gov't giveaway program available. She's content to live in some schithole section 8 apt. and if she needs a little extra spending money, she'll do odd jobs for friends like house cleaning or washing cars...cash only. She has no ambition, no motivation, no plan for her or her child's future...it's only about whatever she needs to make it 'till tomorrow. Very sad indeed.

Pretty much the same in NorCal too. There was a large construction project going up across the street from my office a few years ago and the crews would all be arriving to work around the same time I did. Seemed to be around 95% Hispanic.

I don't think this attitude is as prevalent in the Hispanic culture as in the white middle class. I think it's one of the main reasons that the trades (at least here in CA) are mostly worked by Hispanics, as Zeke mentioned above.
