So what happens when you burn old fireworks???

That have been laying around the house for years and then burn them in a firepit.
Deciding to get rid of them, you throw them in the firepit, where they get soaked for several months with rain.
Then, you light a fire to burn some trash, but forgot you put them in there.
I'm not really worried, just curious.
The flames should get to them in several minutes.

Reason being, a new neighbor moved in next store last week. Still haven't met em'.

Yet.

If they contain KNO3 then it would have dissociated when it got wet. I don't think simple drying would fully restore its' oxidizing property, but have never tested that. So did it 'splode?

I would expect a short hot burn.

It's getting to the area right now. I'm assuming the firecrackers are toast, but the larger rockets got' me wondering.

Doubtful anything will happen, but,
camera is ready.

We used to burn C4 to heat water when I was in the Army. Just break it up into smaller crumbs and light it with a match. It burns real hot so there's a risk of it burning out the bottom of your steal cup. (It will not explode without a shock wave)

I wouldn't try the same thing with old school dynamite.

I thought that the gunpowder in fireworks (which is largely KNO3) is mixed and packed wet for safety reasons? Then it dries out in the cardboard tube. That was my understanding

You may be right I dunno but after "several months of rain" even if the powder regains viability I'd think that the paper and glue would have weakened enough to prevent ignition gasses from accumulating and 'splode. But again I don't know.

Ha! Since the new standard around here is not divulging family secrets for 4 pages or so of text, cut me some slack!

Anyway, the truth was so lackluster it embarrassingly wasn't worth posting.

There WERE some fizzles, but not even enough to videotape, and mostly they sounded about as loud as "silent but deadly" flatus. I got sidetracked with some domestics with my wife, and then fell straight to sleep.

The whole process did get me thinking about the chemistry of it all, especially in some of the larger rockets with strong cardboard bodies which might have not gotten completely soaked- that and the new neighbor, who might not realize burn pits are all the rage in our neck of the woods.

In the end, the fireworks are gone, as well as some of Jimmy Hoffa's effects that my grandfather stole off his dead body. I burnt it all. All gone!

Amateur. Every 4th of July we throw the junk or leftover stuff into the fire pit. Of course this is at the end of the evening, when the beer is nearly gone. Sometimes it makes for an exciting show.

Alright.

I feel sorta bad about last night. I posted a video with the potential of something COOL happening, but I failed to perform (that's what she said).

I considered leaving Virginia and driving to the NC/SC I95's "south of the border" to buy some cool arse explosives and blow stuff up for your entertainment.

But that's ridiculous.

In lieu of last night's performance, I share this video of younglings being stupid with fireworks as reparations.

After a glass of wine or two- it has it's moments. Please feel free to top it!
