On my first date was to an A&W drive-in to share a root beer float. Well...I didn't drive, I was only 4 years old. Her parents drove, but I paid for our float. It was in 1954.

Compared to other soft drinks, root beer is quite wholesome.

I know it's Spring when I take the convertible Mustang to the local drive-in rootbeer stand and get a frosty mug, and a coney dog from a young, pretty car hop girl.

You left out Cheerwine ;)

I haven't had a soda in.....I can't remember when...years.

I did not know of its existence until some where past the beginning of my twenty first journey around the sun.

Adult me is not eating anywhere near the amount of ice cream 10 year old me thought I would.

I did a decent effort of catching up on twix, snickers, milkways, and the like.

With my work I just burned it all off easy.

Seriously..and I assume you grew up near Charlotte...made for over 100 years just up the road from ya. And anyone from around here...likely drinks Pepsi...but calls every soda "a Coke"...

I don't think I've ever uttered the word "soda" or "pop".... but I drank a lot of Cokes...regardless of flavor.

It was a struggle to get anyone to tell me what Cheerwine was, they would think I was joking.

Like I said, products with sugar was night on the level of tribal taboo.

My grandparents used to make Sassafras Root beer. They would make up a large batch, and store in in the cellar. On occasion the bottles would blow the caps off and make a big mess. It was a long time ago and I was a little kid and only vaguely remember it.

We used to go to A&W and get the Papa Burger, or the Mama burger and a frosty root beer. To this day I still don't understand sitting in a car to eat. We have a Sonic a few blocks away. If we get something, I just get it and take it home and eat.

Growing up in the Bay Area we always drank Mug Root Beer, I still enjoy a glass every now and then.....

Most folks aren't likely to have heard of this or will be able to find it easily, but it's darn tasty.
I did have a 2 week period in 2014 where I drank a lot of these. Other than that, the closest that I get to a normal soft drink is by having some sort of unsweetened, either plain or naturally flavored seltzer water.

Anyone else here old enough to remember the A&W drive ins where you could get a big frosty mug of A&W?

Yep. I still have one of the mugs around here somewhere.

When it comes to Ginger Ale and Root Beer, nothing I have had out of a can tastes as good as out of a glass bottle.

When my nieces and nephew from Israel come to visit, they always want root beer. I don't think they can get it there and/or my sister hides it from them.

Here in WI as well.

We have a local bottler that has butterscotch root beer made with real sugar not HFCS. I like most root beer but not Barqs since it upsets my stomach. Dogs and Suds, Dad's, Mug, A&W, Frosties are all good. We make some at home now and then and it is a bit more bready than the store bought or A&W made at the restaurant.

Also, I love ice cream and I love root beer but not together in a glass. Same thing with nuts and desserts. They just don't belong together.

scottmandue 07-27-2018 09:24 AM

When we go out for pizza they have a self serve soda fountain, when we are finished I fill my cup with root beer (may be Mug brand) and take it home to make a float.

But that may be a thing of the past... I sense my wife is getting ready for another "lets get Scott's blood sugar under control crusade"* Which is a good thing... but also means no more pizza and root beer.

*Wife posted a rant about diabetes on Facebook.

I still like A&W but the formula changed back in the 90's or my taste buds did.
I sure do like those drive-ins though.
Your table is always ready.

These are better than any energy drink:
