That and vernors. mmmmmm

tevake 07-26-2018 04:25 PM

That and vanilla ice cream, root beer float. It's the foam that is remarkable.

YUMMM!
Richard

Things with sugar were mostly taboo growing up.

The rare chance I got a taste of root beer was always a treat.

Funny thing, I can go out and buy it, but I don't.

I think i gained 5 pounds just reading that ;)

Anyone else here old enough to remember the A&W drive ins where you could get a big frosty mug of A&W?

LWJ 07-26-2018 04:34 PM

Still have A&W in some places. Like Oregon.

Tervuren 07-26-2018 04:36 PM

I also remember my trepidation about evil alcohol and root beer and ginger ale

That what brought up the root beer float, remembering getting them as a kid at the drive in.
I only realized a couple of years ago that I could make them at home.

If you are concerned about the weight gain, just eat the foam on top.
It's like an ethereal essence of root beer float.

Yep Bill, I've got it bad too!

Cheers Richard

Adult me is not eating anywhere near the amount of ice cream 10 year old me thought I would.

Good stuff, Bill...perfect for Winter in the Southern Hemisphere! :)

Don't have to be that old to remember it since we still have one about an hour away from here. And you can still get a frosty mug full of the real A&W root beer that is a million times better than the stuff you buy in a can or bottle (which doesn't taste anything like the real deal in the restaurants).

We go very few months and the order is always the same. Chili cheese dog, chili cheese fries and a large mug.

I haven’t had soda in years, but my favorites used to be Dr Pepper, Ginger Ale and Root Beer.

Dantilla 07-26-2018 05:39 PM

A few weeks ago my local bank was giving away free root beer floats.
I was going to decline until I saw they were using A&W. Yes!

Delicious.....

I haven’t had a root beer float in ages, but, a float made with a good vanilla Ice Cream and Guinness Extra Stout is really tasty.

This was me, until about a year ago, when I had a Coca-Cola after a long, hot road-ride on my bike, and there was a cooler full of 'em waiting at the finish... Since then, I never miss the chance to have a one out of an icy cold cooler when it's offered. I've refrained from buying it - I know all about diminishing returns, but man, a good old genuine Coca-Cola pulled out of a frosty bed of ice on a hot day really goes down good.

(And a friend of mine recently told me about a real A&W rootbeer stand that's not too far from here, so I think Providence has spoken with this thread! Road Trip!!)

Just had an A&W root beer float last week with my g/f.
Drinking it straight I like to mix Club Soda with it...sparkly and not so sweet.

A H.S. buddy & I drove across the country in 1963. Stopped at every A&W root beer stand we saw traveling across the desserts of the southwest.

Bill Douglas 07-26-2018 09:27 PM

Ha, I'm not alone with my little addiction. Great stuff.

Baz, winter has been very mild. 60 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) yesterday. So maybe a good winter and summer drink :)
