any of you guys/gals into gas pumps for decoration ?

Happy 4th everyone So as I inch closer to completing my man cave I have all the stuff for the inside to decorate: framed car posters/calendars/pics etc. along with some nice cabinets and a killer work bench . So been thinking about one killer piece for the outside and started thinking about an old/er gas pump . Any of you into these ? Most sellers sure are proud of them hard to find any decently priced . I'm hoping to find one that is rusty but solid , I just want to sand it down prime and paint . Probably light it with some LED's and be done . So any bargains to be found out there ? Besides CL and Ebay where else to look ? I am retired so I have more time than money is it possible to find one for 200.00 or less ? Just throwing that number out to start the conversation .

Garage
For what you want to spend you can get a poster of one. Unless you want to ante up, get a reproduction and make it look old.

For $200 you might be able to buy a piece of an original. They go for absurd amounts of money nowadays.

If you really want a deal your best bet is to go rural and drive around. Where my dad lives, there are stations that still have them installed. And up until maybe 10 years ago, still used them. They do exist and folks will let them go 'cheap' but you have to do your own hunting for them (and the smaller, more ghosty the town, the better chance you have of finding them).

I too have thought about doing this. Unfortunately, my man cave (garage) is pretty cramped for space. That said, if I ever find one cheap, I'll snag it.

I found a post online from a guy in the UK that made one out of an old locker like you would find in a school , if I can't find one cheap I will make one . He did a great job and was just simple fab/welding . With some paint and stickers/decals and a globe it looked like a gas pump . That's all I'm looking for . Screw the guys asking 1000.00 for a pump I'm just going for looks .

Why though? Be clever and display something else. Gas pumps and signage are old hat.

Milt I need something to add a little pizazz to my rather mundane man cave exterior . My main goal has been to make it as " elderly " friendly so as I get older minimal maintenance . The space between the two garage doors is a perfect spot for a gas pump ........... real or fake . I guess I'm old hat ........

Yeah but look at all the stuff Don Long has besides signage and pumps. An old well hand pump or other tool. I have a friend that collects farm implements and he's never been a farmer. They do take up a lot of space. Old scales are cool and some sat outside. Railroad stuff, horse stuff, bicycle stuff. Shoot, put a smoker between the doors and get some use out of that space.

I say this because it seems like to get a gas pump you have to $tretch too far. I like to take the easy route. I could see an old exterior porcelain light fixture above a fountain. The fountain could be manufactured or something repurposed to be a fountain like an old rear axle housing.

A street sign on the pole or a trash can made from an oil drum. Fire hydrant. Planter made from a couple of race car slicks. The list is endless.

A fellow I know has a beam sticking out at the place you are talking about. He has a chain fall hooked up to it so He can pull up sideways or back up to the wall and pick heavy loads. The beam is long enough to pull an engine as well. Another guy has one even better, the beam swings.

While not in use you could hang something interesting from the fall assuming the wind wouldn't send it into your doors.

You can buy old vending machines other than Coke for not much money.

Milt I hear you I probably should have saved your bumpers and hung them on the wall ! A fire hydrant is in the mix found one at a garage sale last week but owner wasn't selling . I just like the idea of a gas pump because it is auto related but I'm open to other ideas .

If I was going to spend money decorating a garage, I would find some really cool images of a vintage LeMans garage and have wraps made up that fit the outside of the garage doors. Even black and white it would be cool, in my opinion.

Something like:

That’s exactly where I have my air compressor. Easily decorated with stickers, useful and accessible inside and outside. I always prefer function over form. Decorate with useful, functional tools...you’ll never regret it and the space will be well used. Working vintage stuff is always fun.

My thoughts.

I'm with you on the old pump there, would look good. But they are pricy.

You seem to have pretty good Google fu, keep looking, it may turn up.
Or even a front face plate of a pump body, and mount it flush on the wall.
Might find one of those for reasonable $s

The hunt is on.

The shop is coming together very nicely.

Cheers Richard

How about the nice nostalgic glow of a neon sign?

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR2.TRC0.A0.H0.Xsin clair+ne.TRS0&_nkw=sinclair+neon+sign&_sacat=0

Or just type anything you can think of with 'neon sign' after it in the search and the possibilities are endless. It could go right on the exterior between the two doors. You'd have to check to see if it was okay to be out in the elements.

Castrol neon sign
PBR neon sign
Red Bull neon sign
Porsche repair neon sign

The guys that have posted various links thank you . My air compressor is already in its own separate room on the back of the man cave so that's out . I do have an over hang running across the front of the building so a neon sign is a possibility . I had seen the wood kits but didn't realize they made outdoor versions I may have to reconsider that route . I just missed out the other day on a Tokheim 300 pump in Jacksonville FL. for $50.00 ! He sold it locally but proves deals are out there .

I've restored over 40 old gas pumps since the 90's. Don't have a one left. I used to live in a rural area where lots of farmers still had them on their property. At the time they would give them to you or maybe $50 bucks. I loved taking them apart and repainting them. I sold most of them for around $500 dollar's each over the years. It was a very enjoyable hobby. The hunt for them was fun too. I downsized last year and sold the last two i had. One of them was outside my garage as a night life and it looked great. You can buy reproduction pumps at shows or online for around $600 ? which do look good. Nothing beats an old pump for a man cave. Good luck.
