I have several if you want to borrow one, or buy a almost new one for less money. A couple different Plano's, and two that look like cases a rock band use for an expensive guitar.

Note that the padlock holes are not metal/steel reinforced -- not a big deal for my needs, but if you're going to travel with your long spoons more than once or twice a year you might invest in a Pelican.

All I can say is get something that locks at BOTH ends. Make sure the corners of the of the case cannot be pulled up. Checked my gun through Detroit, and it only had a padlock in the middle. Some Mfer pulled up one corner of the case, and clearly had tried to pull the gun out. Tore up the foam inside. The velcro straps were enough to hold it down. In a major US airport! Incredible.

The one I have relied upon for decades is an old Cabela's aluminum case. It has a rod that goes lengthwise through every latch and that rod padlocks to one end. I searched their website but could not find one like it. There has to be something similar on the market today, though. It would be worth finding one.

Experiences like HardDrive's are, unfortunately, not at all uncommon. Anything you can pry a corner up on is out. Anything plastic is out.

Here is mine. It's got a lot of miles on it, and has never let me down. It's satisfied every little self-important piss-ant customs inspector who has ever seen it. Most importantly, it has never been breached. I can tell you horror stories about buddies' gun cases that cannot make that claim.

Awesome! It's the best one I've found after trying a few inferior designs many years ago. I've had mine for over 20 years. It's a two gun capacity case, since I often travelled with a partner, or brought two rifles of my own (one general purpose and one heavy). I can't say enough about these cases. Kinda spendy, but nothing like the rifles they are protecting.

Thinking of running a cable lock thru the action. That way I can also run it thru the lanyard hole of my knife to keep it from walking away. It it okay to pull the bolt and put it in a padded wrap? Off to the side? If I just open the bolt, it will be poking hard into the foam.

Most (probably all) airlines have information regarding traveling with firearms on their websites. It's always a good idea to review that information prior to travel. Most do not require that the action be open, just that the rifle be unloaded and any detachable magazine removed. No one I have ever traveled with requires that the bolt be removed. Many action types cannot be similarly disassembled (single shots, lever guns, doubles, etc.), so that is not a requirement.

This can get to be a real quagmire at times. Don't be surprised if you understand the airline's rules better than the folks you will meet at check in. They may have a completely different understanding of them than the clear instructions on their own website. Some will get all pumped up and try to make your experience as unpleasant as possible, if they have any sort of an anti-gun leaning. Make them follow their own rules - if they don't understand them and give you a hard time, don't hesitate to demand a supervisor to straighten it out. Print a copy of their rules and have it with you.

Some airlines will require that any ammo be packed in the same case as the rifle. Some will forbid it, and require ammo to be packed separately. Most will require that ammo be packed in "original packaging" that is meant to hold ammunition. I have always had it packed in MTM or similar plastic boxes, rather than "original packaging", and have never had any trouble. If it's meant to store ammo it's going to be good enough. Unless you are traveling overseas, but you are not, so you should be fine.

Pulling the action will not cause any issues.

They will open the case when you check it in to inspect everything, typically with you in a back room. You can leave your knife in there when you Re-lock the case. Like Jeff said, some will want the ammo in there and some separate.

I have flown out of a number of CA airports with handguns and never had a problem checking them.

+1 for pelican/storm. Storms have a better latch that’s easier to replace if it ever breaks; which it rarely will.

BSIPLE. thanks for the reminder.

my bow case is an SKB. i could have used it for my rifle, but i wanted something i could put my own locks on. my bowcase only has TSA locks. acceptable for my bow, but i want more security for firearms.

i found a decent SKB single rifle case and jumped on it. shipping would have been to close for comfort for me.

i would love one of those metal ones. put a PETA sticker on it plus some other similar ones for camouflage.
