He was the kind of guy who always tried to do what he thought was right, and stood up for people on both sides of the aisle. He gave his entire adult life to the service of the American people, and I don't think he ever took that lightly.

If I remember correctly he was flying missions from the Oriskany when he was shot down after switching carriers. He was like most of the Navy pilots I met while on the Enterprise in that he hated the way Nixon and later Johnson were running the war instead of letting the Generals and Admirals make the decisions. If I had been him I would put in my will that NO former or current presidents could speak at my funeral because a president had made my capture happen!

I respect the man and thank him for his service to this country. I think he put principle above popularity, its a shame that isnt the standard. I really enjoyed the HBO piece about his life, check it out if you havent seen it. |
