A Spanish-speaking Taco Bell employee in Florida was let go by the fast food chain after a video circulating on social media this week showed her refusing to serve an English-speaking customer.

The video shows the employee at the restaurant’s Hialeah location appearing to become annoyed when customer Alexandria Montgomery tried placing her order in English, the Miami Herald reported.

My wife and I reviewed the video.

1. The window girl does understand English. The person asked for the manager and the window girl responded that "the manager is at her house sleeping". So she did understand the demand.
2. My wife believes the girl at the window is Cuban,
3. The people in the car are African American
4. Hispanics and African American, as groups, do not get along.

I believe the Window girl was discriminating against the people in the car for skin color, not language skills.

I agree with Redbeard, that incident at the drive through was not a language issue.


15+ years ago we were driving down to the Keys, we took I95 all the way down until it terminated in Miami near Bayfront then the plan was to pick up US1 and head in.

We stopped at a McDonalds to use bathroom and grab a snack before continuing.

The menu on the wall was all in Spanish. The girl behind the counter could not understand me trying to order in English a man behind me in line was nice enough to translate for me and then help us with directions to the Keys.


2 Years ago we were in Brickell Village in Miami which is not far from Calle Ocho as it is called which Spanish for 8th street in Miami where Little Havana is.

We wanted come good cafe con leche and a proper Cuban breakfast, Yelp told us about a great authentic place. The menus were in Spanish but English menus were provided after we asked for them. The waitress was very nice but did not speak English so ordering was reduced to pointing to items on the Spanish menu.

In the first case I was shocked, now? I expect it when visiting Miami.

My wifes best friend growing up was Puerto Rican, parents moved here when she was a small child, she was forbidden from speaking Spanish and only allowed to speak English. She could understand Spanish spoken to her but could not speak it, I know weird. This would prove to be a problem finding a secretary / receptionist job in Miami. You have to be bi-lingual to be considered at most companies.


Much of Miami, especially Little Havana is Spanish only most anyone that lives there or visits regularly knows that. Most of the time, if you are polite, most will muddle through some broken English to communicate, it they can.

I know its is nuts, a place in America where Spanish only is spoken. I used to be upset over it, now I think it is part of what makes it unique.

Everyone in Hialeah is black (at least they were when I lived there). This is not the first black person to come to that drive up, and it's probably not the first one to drive away without any food.

Edit: I take that back, I got it mixed up with all of the communities around there, like Liberty City. Hialeah is a Cuban enclave now, but I don't think it was 15 years ago.

There are small pockets of Spanish immigrants who lives near the city of Wollongong NSWs (AUS). They migrated to Australia during the early 60s and most of them worked in the steel mill. If you go to these areas today the locals still speak English with a thick Spanish accent & some of the older people can't speak English at all.

A. The window gal was an employee. So irrelevant.

B. I believe in an absolute right of association. Some business owner could choose to only serve customers in Sanskrit.

After spending a month in Portugal where the people I associated with all spoke some level of broken English I arrived back in the US in Atlanta. I stopped at one of the airport restaurants and realized that the Portuguese trying to speak English spoke it more clearly than the native English speaking staff at the airport restaurant.

Any place where I have to speak Spanish to order, or at least have an easy time of ordering, better not be passing off the crap Taco Bell serves as "Mexican" "food".

And yes, even here in redneckville N Central Florida there is a place or two like that.... and DEFINITELY worth stopping at for lunch or a snack if you are in the right area at the right time. One just south of Ocala that we time all of our travel past to hit just before/after lunch or after work rush, we get lunch and some special groceries for the wife do do home made sofrito, etc.

But they are assimilating. Any bets on 5th and 6th generation?

Think the difference, and what a lot of folks don't like, is that people leave place A, move to place B, and instead of integrating in place B and becoming part of the existing community they create a micro-community (or not so micro in some cases) of place A. Instead of being Cuban-Americans or Mexican-Americans why not just be Americans?
