Bank Debit Card - Fraud Again

Some input needed here. I bank with a large / local institution. My debit card is 'chip' protected. It is connected to only 1 checking account. It is my main card for use at POS and online.

I don't have that info everywhere nor am I careless with how and where it's used. I don't visit 'risky' web sites........... at all.

Last week the bank's fraud protection service called me and the card was used locally 3 times in one day. Locally as in 40 miles away at a gas station. Previous time same deal, twice in one day again at a gas station @60 miles away.

Having worked in IT years ago, coding the magnetic strip on the back of a card is dead nuts simple, you buy the hardware and program, key it in.

But they still need my zip code to use it. Also how is the fraud company detecting it? Is it because of lack of security chip? In all instances the charges were $75 and below.

Gas stations all have cameras, and the chances are they bought gas. So with the car's rego on camera you have got them.

Gas station with external skimmer are now common. Until the pumps are setup for reading the chip, this will remain a problem.

The skimmers are becoming very tough to spot!

Perhaps a gas station outside of your established pattern?

I suspect that's a lot of the detection...a decade ago it was gas in Indiana....card "flagged" and disabled on me. A few years back it was a phone message ....a couple of $6-700 weekend charges in San Fran. Don't know how but they detect....I'm a small CU card person...I'd bet there's just a few "service providers" covering all cards...but I dunno.

So Im covered financially, but any charges $75+ take 7- 10 days to credit. I'm really tryin to understand how the thieves got enough of my info in the first place?

If they got your info from a gas station skimmer all they have to do it use the zip where they got the info and chances are they'll be able to use your card since 9 times out of 10, people get gas close to home.

Frank Abignale (the guy from Catch me if you can) has a great video about never using your ATM card for anything except cash at you ATM. Always use a credit card. It improves you FICO score and if you are hacked you are not any money because the credit cart issuer eats the charges.

Several weeks ago my credit card was hacked and they charged up 2400 dollars worth of charges and I was out of pocket 0 dollars.

If you search on youtube for Frank Abignale google talk it is a good video.

99.99% of the time, the skimmers have a small camera that records the act of punching your zip code into the gas pump, so they have your card details and your zip code in one go.

These days, most card companies catch stuff REALLY fast. Usually when something happens to my card, we get a call on the first or second transaction and 99% of the time, the fraudulent charges were blocked by my card company.

Also, most places protect you on debit cards too, so you're usually not out of pocket any money. I don't really think it matters any more if it's debit card or a credit card unless maybe it's with a really small bank.

I was sitting watching TV last week and got a text from my bank at 9pm. Asking if I just used my Visa at Walmart 15 min from my house. Called them and said no. They told me it didn't match my normal usage according to their records. The charge was declined. Pretty amazing software in action.

I only use my debit card as an ATM card at my bank. While fraud detection has gotten better, you are still on the hook for any purchases or withdrawals made that they don't happen to catch.

I just had both of my BofA ATM cards hacked on the same day. One card was used to run up over $700.00 in fuel charges within a two hour period. I had to call the bank and notify them that the charges were bogus. There were nine fuel charges and an equal number of overdraft charges.

BofA has a new system where your phone has to ping a cell tower within a certain distance as an additional step in the authorization process.

This is what happened to us at a local reservation restaurant. Three days after eating there our credit card was used at an out of town place. The card company contacted me & I told them it was bogus. A month or month & a half later, we ate at the same place. Three days later we went through the same scenario. I looked at our charge history & it was three days each time after eating at that place. I did a print out of the charges & took it to the head of security, told him about it & showed him the charge history. Haven't had a problem in a couple of years now.

NOT being racist here. Only stating a fact...

I used to work for a credit card company. 19 out of 20 credit card frauds were done by Chinese restaurants.

I recently used a card at a gas station and accidently punched in the zip code incorrectly. I did not know it at the time but the sale went through anyway. About an hour later I get an email from the CC company asking if I made the purchase.
The CC companies do not care about fraud because they just debit the money from the merchant so the one who gets screwed is the merchant not the CC company.
I had a problem at one of my stores with a person using a skimmed CC for a $15 sale. The CC company debited my account for the $15. I called them and told them I have the person on video using the card. They said what are you worried about it is only $15?
