Ikea? Hate that place

Had a hot lunch date there today.:D Just came back from Ikea with my wife with a truck load of crap purchased for our rental. I can't seem to get out of that place and keep going in circles. They want to keep you there to spend more money. Its not a place you get in, buy items needed, then leave. Good thing is, the Swedish meatballs is pretty good.

Dante wasn't from Italy, he was from Sweden.

Jim Richards 08-31-2018 06:19 PM

And he couldn’t follow their €*@$%& instructions!

porsche4life 08-31-2018 06:40 PM

I don’t mind it. The app is a godsend, tells you what bin everything is in, and how many are in stock.

Absolutely. Figure out what you want, go in the exit and straight to the warehouse full of stuff most of the time. Occasionally, we have to wander around to look at things, but neither of us like that. Also, there are usually shortcuts in the rat maze to get you out faster.

I haven't ever had the food. I'm curious about the meatballs, but what kills me is the smell of the cinnamon rolls. I've got a major sweet tooth, actually all of them.

I don't get the place, in Denver across the lane from Ikea is Ethan Allen, no assembly and they deliver, the stuff lasts for generations. We had one Ikea thing and it was particle board and fell apart, I just don't get the allure, is it the shopping experience?

craigster59 08-31-2018 07:57 PM

You were at the Burbank Ikea, the largest in the World! Movie/TV set dressing thrives off of Ikea.

I love the Swedish meatballs there. Great "people watching" too.

Yep, that mad house its only 15 from our house. The crowd wasn't too bad, but the parking lot is a mess. Seriously, the largest? I thought my wife was talking out of her azz again. I tried a box of their frozen Swedish meatballs long ago. It was nothing like eating the ones there. Maybe I am a horrible at heating up food:eek:

Me (in heavy Russian ascent): I think I am going to buy a little GAZ so I can drive my family to see my relatives in the village 20 kilometer away instead of walking in Siberia winter. ;)

Scott: WTF dude, buy the Benz G class across the river. There's one in the show room floor now. Why would you have to walk 10k to the GAZ and pick up that tin can POS with bicycle tires yourself while the Benz people will delivery it to your front door with a full tank of gas.

Apple and oranges. Big difference between Ethan Allen and IKEA. Its for my rental, closets, more closets and bath room vanities.

livi 08-31-2018 10:36 PM

Funny thread. :)

look 171 08-31-2018 11:57 PM

Hey man, its like you guys talking about American muscle cars:D

I bet IKEA must be big over there? There used to be a store name Stork from Sweden that sold knock down furniture similar to IKEA. Are there more similar stores there?

URY914 09-01-2018 02:44 AM

There are plenty of hot women to look at which seems to get me though it all. . ;)

CurtEgerer 09-01-2018 05:20 AM

I had an hour or so to kill while waiting to pick someone up from the airport in Orlando, so I wandered into the Ikea to kill time. I couldn't figure out if I was in an amusement park fun house or a home furnishings store. Seems like a good place to shop for people with A.D.D.

The last time we went I said never again. Of course it was on a Saturday which is the worst day to go. It was a bunch of parents shopping but they all told the kids that this was a big playground so go play and don't bother us.
It was nutz!

Are you talking about STOR? (with the "/" across the O.) That was an American business out of the City of Industry that had several stores in Industry, Tustin, Torrance, and were sued by Ikea shortly after they opened. Suit settled and Ikea acquired them in 1992. I went to STOR several times in the late 80's and when Ikea arrived, readily noticed the similarity.

VINMAN 09-01-2018 01:37 PM

I go to Ikea for the meatball platter, apple cake and babe watching.

I have been in an Ethan Allen store and would consider going there again.
Can't say the same about that other place.

FYI, some of the stuff is crap made out of particle board, some is solid plank thats made much better. I doubt that much of it would last generations, but sometimes you don't want stuff that costs $250 and will last 100 years. Sometimes you want somehting that costs $15 and will last 3-5 years.

legion 09-02-2018 06:50 PM

Never been in one. Most of my furniture is inherited. What isn't is from the Amish. What the Amish won't make for me I make for myself.

I quit on particle board back in the oughts....

Similar discussion for sure. :D
Its huge. I rarely visit though. Too much people.
Never heard of Stork, unless its a bird with tall legs.

One idea is to build your own cabinet boxes and then fill them with IKEA drawers, etc. A drawer that fits in a 28" net opening is 25 bucks. And that includes soft close guides. You can't build a drawer and buy guides and beat that price.

Even better, a wire mesh basket pullout of the same size is only $15!! Very nice for socks, sweaters, etc. for the ventilation. Comes with the mounting rails as well.

We walk into IKEA to get DIY ideas for our own home, not buy rooms full of cheap furniture. I think we have only bought a stand up closet for my son that we couldn't find elsewhere.

dan79brooklyn 09-04-2018 03:05 AM

Just picked up a TV STAND/storage unit at IKEA along with a desk and chair for my son. Plus a few odds and ends. Had a cheap Swiss meatball lunch too.
Very nice experience.

Just settled my daughter into an apartment in Arizona for grad school. Was cheaper to hit the Ikea in Tempe to furnish her 4 yr home then move hand me downs from Maryland. Everything she got was wood; no particle board. While not perfect for everything, it was perfect for this purpose. Just like everything else in life, a place for everything...

berettafan 09-04-2018 04:41 AM

funny I saw the thread title and popped in just to mention the meatballs! grew up eating what my mother called 'Swedish meatballs' and always loved them.

we get good use from their plastic containers and various organizing pieces.

onewhippedpuppy 09-04-2018 05:23 AM

Went there once, I don't get it. Dorm quality furniture contained within a rat maze with no windows. Like some sort of weird study on human behavior. My wife and I were trying to figure out how to escape, but ended up just following the sheeple through the maze. No thanks.

About half of whom probably thought you were one of the sheeple as they were making their own escape.

Never been inside an Ikea, maybe I should reconsider?
