BMI and Body Fat %

The company that I work for has yearly wellness screenings. I've been there for 7 years now. The goal with respect to weight up until now has always been "BMI <25.0".

When I first started, my BMI was something like 25.2. I'm now down to 23.0 and feeling pretty good.

I went in for my next wellness screening this morning and they've changed the goal. Now they take your BMI, but they also take your Body Fat Percentage that they take with a device that looks like a video game controller that you hold for 5-10 seconds. I guess the theory is that it checks your resistance or electrical conductivity or something like that to get BMI and BF%.

Well, the new goal for men 40-59 is a body fat % of 11% - 21.9%. I'm at 23.7% according to their machine. So, at 6' 1.5" and 177#, I'm considered "overweight".

You've gotta love a moving target.

BMI is BS. When I was in my best marathon-running shape (as in two in one month and crushed them both), the BMI chart said I was obese. Total joke.

BMI is only useful to measure populations, not individuals. Considering your height and weight I'm skeptical of that bf%.

Agreed!!! I decided to get my body fat down to single digits. Like 7%. My wife has the calipers from her body building days. I was running 7 miles a day, strict diet and weight training 4 days a week.

Calipers said body fat was 7% which was my goal, took a ton of work!! BMI said I was over weight!!

I had an "almost 6 pack" which was a defined 4 pack with 2 almost there.

I will never do that again. It sucked and I could not drink beer. F that. #neveragain

And at 7%, if you are over 40, my chart says that you're underweight (under 11%).

I think they're full of crap myself, but then I know guys that are 5'10" and 220 that think they aren't over weight (and no, they aren't muscled up body builder types)

BMI is worthless. So many body types out there. Everything in moderation, live life.

5'7" at my leanest I was 155 lbs. Was benching around 300 lbs at the time.

BMI says I am borderline overweight with a 24 rate.

I just found a pic. I was in my mid 40's in this pic.

Those Omron types are +/-5% margin of error. Though trending down is a good target. I have a scale with such contraption and have been hovering around 17-18%. The better test is the water dunk test, and I was 15% at one point. If I could get to 10 I would be happy.

My doctor does not think I should be under 15%. I was 17% last visit.

Amen!!

I keep my weight between 160-165 and can just live life. Wife and I walk 4 miles a day (2 in morning and 2 in evening) together and I walk another 6 miles a day easy at work. That is my cardio now.

I try to hit the gym 2-3 times a week. I eat pretty much what I want and try to keep the beers to the weekends. Might sneak a cheeky one or 2 during the week when the mood strikes.

When I was reading a book by Dr. Sears he said most Olympic athletes are around 10% body fat.

When our company did the screenings the screening company told me my ideal body weight and when I told them that weight would put me at less than 2% body fat they said they knew the BMI was crap but they had to go by it. Though I am currently 17% body fat now I am still 35# over what they considered my ideal. My doctor is happy with my current weight and he determines what he wants by my overall health.

Why is 25% in female form so much more attractive than any of the other photos?

At 5'10" and 185#, my BMI is 27....which if you look around me at work, I am in the top 5% percentile of healthy looking adults that I work with. There are several that I have no doubt are in the mid to high 60s for thier BMI, living on borrowed time.

Different clothes, different pose, different lighting. I prefer the 30%, which is just about where MrsWD is.
