Funny, if you didnt point it out I wouldnt have picked it out either. From a guy thats wanted a 993 for years the 996tt argument is interesting.

I fought the water-cooled cars as an air-cooled "purest" for years. After a couple years in the passenger seats as a POC instructor in H20 ABS cars on race tracks I crossed over. I'd see them leaving streaming Pandora, rolled ups windows and cold A/C...then on Monday they drive them to work. Every event there was at least one air cooled car waiting for the tow truck. Then, my buddy bought a $40K 996TT with 110K miles, fresh clutch, and welded coolant pipes. He let me drive it  and I never looked back. I sold my SC, and long-hood hot rod, bought the 997TT with 28K miles (M/T, Sport Seats, Chrono, Nav, Bluetooth), and used the extra money to remodel our master bathroom. $50K for a 993  $35K for a 3.2 Carrera  A 997TT for $55k :D Slam dunk. |

If you can't afford multiple Porsches to suit your mood, the 996TT is about as close to perfect as $45k will buy you. They are really quite amazing cars, and mine is on the very short list of cars that I wish I could have back.

One of my friends has been into Porsches for many years. He sold two older air cooled 911s to buy a 996TT. He said it was hard not to get tickets because it was so fast. He loved everything about it until it was time for some repairs.
He needed new rear tires. Those were his first shock. The the instrument cluster had serious issues. It was very expensive to fix. Of course nothing much is cheap to fix on a turbo. He still loves it and is happy with his decision. |

Even used, these cars are not for people who are afraid to spend $$ on maintaining them. It's the part of the equation that goes up as the price of admission goes down. |

A friend of mine has an 01 TT. He's always fixing it. Boost leaks, radiators, auto wing, calipers, some kind of tubes and a lot more I can't remember.

Just an average car that was well cared for by original owner.
Every TT has boost leaks, or at least the 4 cars I've known the owners of have had boost leaks. |
As someone mentioned, sell both but instead of a 996 (which I love) get a Cayman S or a Box S. Money in the bank (to invest) and a great car to drive which you won't worry about putting miles on since they made so many of them. End up with money in bank, great driver and a car you won't worry about losing money on with mileage.
Non Applicable if reluctant to join the dark side (water cooled). |

Well it's a big enough problem that owners have developed their own homemade testers. Googling yields a lot.

So many options and a good problem to have except that it is not under the best circumstances. So maybe you are not thinking clearly right now with the added pressure of this big change.. Sell them both to a 'shell buyer' for pennies on the dollar & after the divorce buy them both back. It is good to have two Porsches, you can always sell one later on after the dust settles.
|
I'm a good shell :)
|
I'd say that if the biggest problems on 996tt cars are boost leaks, give me two of them. BFD compared to the bank account draining issues on older, air-cooled Porsches.
