Which 911 to sell (1st world problem)
With some life changes going on I've been contemplating selling one of my 911s. I've actually been thinking about it for a long time as I need to thin down and simplify.
One is a 1984 3.2 coupe in Ruby Red, 109,000 miles, straight, rust free AZ car. Needs a dash, front seats upholstered, paint is shiny but lots of rock chips. AC does not work. mechanically very sound. The other is my 1995 993. Polar Silver Coupe, straight, rust free AZ car. Coincidentally, also has 109,000 miles. This car is sorted, drives wonderfully, doesn't really need anything except AC needs to be refilled every six months or so. Both are original miles, lots of maintenance history with both cars (the '84 just about to day one, the '95 nearly so). Both cars have been repainted at some point in their lives. I love both of them. The '84 sits mostly in storage but I try and drive the car every 4-6 weeks, The 993 gets driven much more simply because it so much nicer (modern, comfy). Were you in my shoes which would you sell? Pictures to follow...

Man, that's tough. If I had both, I wouldn't want to sell either. I had an '88. I couldn't really afford it and sold it. I really wish I'd done whatever I could do to keep it now.
I haven't had a 993, but it's still air-cooled. I guess, considering your description, I'd keep the 993 and sell the '84. You drive the 993 more, so keep that one. No point in keeping the one that you barely drive. It's not like the 84 is a super rare or super collectible model. The 993 is probably as much or more sought after. I haven't kept up with the markets since I don't have one to sell and can't afford to buy an air-cooled, but I would assume you won't get as much for the '84 since it needs a little work. I suspect you'll still get a good price for it since, I think, the air-cooled market is still pretty hot. You should post pics of both just so I have something to drool over. I really miss my old '88. The Boxster is a fantastic car, but it just doesn't have the character of the older cars.

Both cars are stock configuration. I like the '84 a little better because of the classic looks but the 993 is more fun to drive (but a bit more expensive to own).

That's tough, both are great, but I have to say, the '84 tugs at my heart strings a little more than the 993. I'd probably give a couple of toes to have either.

I've had both, but That's an impossible question to answer without knowing more about your situation. Obviously, the 993 is worth more money. if it's a pop to the bank account you're after. The 993 is the obvious choice to sell.
If you're just looking for garage space, dump the 3.2 Carrera. As the last air cooled and hand built car, the 993 is more likely to appreciate. At 109K mileage, both motors bottom-ends are just adolescents. The 993's 3.6 is likely to need more work over the long run. Either could need a top-end refresh. That all depends on the driving and maintenance history Personally, I prefer the 3.2 Carrera to a 993. The 993 is a heavy car and they tend to push, unless you stiffen up the rear end. If it was me, I'd sell the 993 and take the extra $20K you'd get for the 993 and put that $20K into the 3.2 (e.g respray rock chips, reupholster seats, some Tarret adjustable sway bars, heavier Tarret T-bars), then HPDE and canyon run the hell out of it.

Sell the 993 and take some of the capital to fix the AC and things that need to be fixed and upgrade and refresh things a little. That's absolutely the way to go!

It's impossible for someone else to answer that for you. Neither car is remotely unreplaceable in that condition so I'd sell the one you never drive.
FWIW, I'm watching a Ruby Red '84 3.2 coupe on BAT right now that ends tomorrow. Similar miles and slightly better condition, (paint and interior). Hard to say what it will bring, a lot can happen in 20 hours but it's been stuck in the high-20s for a while. I predict low 30s.

People are projecting their own tastes and preferences on this that may or may not line up w the OP. I personally can't stand 993s, if I won one in a raffle, I'd put it up for sale the next day.

I didn't want to say that...But. Pushy pigs. The POC had to create their own time trial class because they we're so slow. LOL

Right, and could even afford one of those A/C upgrades with the extra condenser under the car, etc....

Your '84 is just beautiful. If that was mine I'd find it very difficult to part with.
Back to the question... I'd advise selling the '84 and enjoying the 993. Only because you don't like driving the '84 as much as the 993. For me you have to drive the cars you own. Otherwise why own them? People argue about investment etc but the reality is these cars are at their proper value right now. I can't see them appreciating into the stratosphere like some people predict. ![]() Not that long ago a white 74 RS sold for well over $1,000,000. What are they selling for now? ![]()

Sell both in the spring while the 911 bubble it still hot. For the love of god don't drop half the value of the 3.2 into it just to never get it back.
Polish shine and hit the low hanging fruit on both and dump them while the getting is good. |

FWIW, a stock 3.2 Carrera is slower than cow slop and pushes like a pig as well. But that is easily solved. ![]()

I estimate the '84 to be worth around $28K (ish). The front seats are shot but it currently has correct leather sport seats instead (in black leather, the rest of the interior is burgundy). The car came from the factory with 7 and 8 inch Fuchs (one year only for 1984). Those are off the car, they need refinishing. Right now it is running 6 and 8 inch Fuchs like in the picture. Also has an M&K premuffler and Steve Wong Chip. I still have the original Cat and Chip.
The 993 is probably worth around $40-45. Has been lowered a bit with Eibach springs and Bilstein HD shocks and struts. Black interior. They both drive nice but I feel as I get older (I'm 51) I'll want the creature comforts (and quiet) of the 993. Whichever one gets sold will probably go towards the purchase of a house rather than upgrades. I do love the classic looks of the '84, and I could make it ride a little nicer. The thing I'm not crazy about the 993 is it looks like any other 997 or 991 (not to us, we know better).

I'm in Phoenix but may be moving (going through divorce, hence the need for $$$ and simplification).
