I thought Australia was not big on immigration? Last I check was over a decade ago so maybe things have changed.

It's been awhile since we looked into Australia (Tasmania), but as I recall, they wanted an "investment" in the country of between $1M-$1.5M (at least it was in AU $$$) for a couple, plus solid evidence that you can support yourself once there. My wife and I decided we'd suffer here in the US with quite a bit more money in our bank accounts than if we moved Down Under.

Would that we could have such immigration policies here ...

That my recollection Norm; New Zealand was more strict yet.......Been to AU 3 times and love the land/people, it just doesn't pencil out.

Having been in all 50 states and 38 countries, my vote would be either Eastern TN or Colorado, west slope towns like Grand Junction, Montrose, Cortez or Durango....

Why the west slope towns? Climate? Cost?

Traffic!

Montrose and Durango will get you near some great scenery. Grand Junction is cheaper and more accessible but has a look reminiscent of Mars.

If you come to Georgia....this is about $400k:

But dont do it. Because it’s outside of Atlanta and Atlanta is full!

^^^^^When I think of Atlanta, this picture is the one that pops into my mind from having traveled in, and around it several times on 14+ through lanes on the I75 highway.

I can't stand traffic, or masses of people.

Believe it or not the coast of SWFL has few mosquitoes. Since the threat of zika, the county south of me, Collier won't tolerate them.

We have friendly garden lizards that keep away the bugs too.

No state income tax.

And the there's fishing.. Fresh and salt.

My father lived near Lenoir, TN on Loudoun Lake for a three years. Nice area and there are neighborhoods in Knoxville that are spectacular.

The heat and bug were a deal breaker as he got older. He moved back West.

He also lived in Bend, Ore, for a few years and I liked the area lot. He moved because he was consulting quite a bit and flying out of Portland in the winter became a challenge.

Bend is a lot more crowded now but I could do the towns north of Bend.

I was having drinks at our community club with an older gentleman who said, "Being a snowbird is for the young people. One day I woke up and just stayed here."

The midwest seems to be the best bang for buck. You might want to be near good medical or access to it.

What bothers me is the "not discovered yet" comments... I retire next year at 62 and if I move to a nice quiet place in my mid 60's and then have it turn into a zoo in 5-10 years. I want/need to make my next move my last.

Good luck with that. Move someplace that really sucks and is really miserable and you'll probably be ok. No one will ever discover it. If you find someplace amazing and cheap, it's not a matter of if, but when...

I can remember when San Pedro was a nice quiet place!
