sliced bread. do you eat the heel? (this is about food waste)

i just got back from a two week camping trip. we barely had enough food. i ate the heel. my brother would dig past it.

got me thinking? as a country; the amount of food we waste must be effen astronomical!

me, myself; will forget about that bag of lettuce in the back of the fridge and have to toss the wet mess later. leftovers have a 50/50 chance at my house. sometimes i package it up neatly (to eat later) just so i can throw it out later. i either forget about it, or i tire of it.

school lunches? i've seen the food go out of the back. restaurants? holy.

where did we go wrong..i bet everything was used in the depression days...then what? we just trickled back to our wild ways?

imagine the farmers tossing out visually subpar vegetables? nobody wants to buy a carrot that looks like a pecker.

I hate the heels and dig past them and the first full slice as well. I'm OCD and can't deal with making a sammich with two pieces of bread that aren't the same size. With that said though, I leave them in the bag with the rest of the loaf so it keeps the inner slices moist. If you take it out and toss it then that first slice always gets dry.

I like it, especially as toast.

Will use it for other things than sandwiches if the cross section is too small.

I think we waste up to half the food produced in this country or something like that. Grape of Wrath.

We don't throw much food out at my house.
Well below 10% if I had to guess.

I expect that restaurants and such are the biggest food wasters, they prepare food that doesn't get served so it gets tossed.

I've got relatives that skip the slice AFTER the heel as well. Drives me crazy! I'll eat the heels as toast when the loaf is about gone.

Dried up bread is great for olive oil spices and baking for croutons.

I went to a local sandwich place a while back, and they made my sandwich using two heels turned upside down, thinking I wouldn't notice! It's one thing is you're eating the bread heels to avert a Donner-party situation, and quite another to serve that 5hit to a paying customer.

What sandwich place, so I can not go there.

I eat the heels myself, the ends are the last sandwich in the loaf.

The prodigal sons of America...wasting food is another symptom of what America has turned into. The mindset that America is a rich nation so we can squander food.

Love the heel/crusty part of the bread. If its good bread, it has the most flavor, IMHO.

I usually have the heel with eggs in the morning or just as toast in general. My wife and kids won't touch the heels and it drives me crazy.

Guilty of not eating the heel unless I have to. Regarding restaurants. When I was young & had no money, we'd go over to the coast (Santa Cruz, etc.) in a buddy's car that got 40 mpg. We'd only have maybe fifty cents in our pockets. We'd sleep on the beach, siphon gas (yeah I know), and for food go into a restaurant and ask the busboys to put some leftover food (that hadn't been chomped on) into bags for us to come back later to pick up. We ate like kings.

This is true. We never buy pre-sliced bread, and if the chickens get any of the loaf it’s the white part in the middle.
We only throw food away in the summer when the garden is so productive the chickens can’t eat the surplus.
