I abruptly turn off the radio/TV if any form of rap music comes on....it's like my kryptonite. I do enjoy classic rock, new country, and some jazz, but not rap...ever !

Kayne Cardashian is a superstar wannabe who can't seem to make enough waves...always trying to stir **** up.

Not one? :D

Another old white guy here... but there is some good rap... unfortunately like a lot of good music/art it doesn't get out in the light.

Now go listen to some Mozart!

PS: I don't own any rap... check that, I have a Gill Scott Heron CD (look it up)

This whole rap, Hip hop generation of music reminds me of my parents generation of listeners reaction to that crazy Rock n Roll music back in the day.
Except now I'm the one not diggin it and tuning out.

I haven't been able to listened to it enough to develop an appreciation for it, there must be something there, I hope.

Cheers Richard

I always thought that was amazing- truly groundbreaking!

ckcarr 10-03-2018 08:19 AM

Never trust anyone over 30. Especially music opinions...

Steve Carlton 10-03-2018 08:20 AM

By 60, you circle back and become trustworthy again.

Zeke 10-03-2018 08:29 AM

I can't trust anyone under 30.

—really old white dude. (and we don't run this place.)

The old school stuff I liked a lot, I was a huge RUN DMC fan. Once it went to NWA and Gansta Rap I was losing interest fast.

After moving to So. Florida we were DJ Magic Mike fans, of course we also listened to 2 Live Crew mostly to piss off people and because their music was banned on the radio.

I still listen to the Beastie Boys, I have Pauls Boutique on my USB in my work truck I was listening to it yesterday.

I like all music except country and rap, but I do like rap-rock

What does the colour of my skin have to do with music likes?

And define...old

Kanye isn't all bad. Rap isn't all bad -- and I'm an over 60 white guy.

I have no use for the profanity laced lyrics with gratuitous F-bombs and advocating beeoch slappin. However, some of the lyrics are good if you take the time to listen. My parents didn't like Led Zep, Jimmy Hendrix, Black Sabbath, The Who, CSN&Y... They were more into Dean Martin, Sinatra, Eddie Arnold, Roy Rogers. It doesn't bother me that I dislike for some of what my kids like, my folks felt the same.

It's good to push boundaries when you are young, challenge the status quo, make you own mark on the world, and keep it going (with more judgement applied) as you mature. Just don't advocate violence.

I think there is value in listening to what our kids listen to, what they are being exposed to, and how they may be influenced by current popular culture. Seems to me our guidance as parents stands a better chance of being heard if our kids know we are taking the time to understand what they see & hear.

Here is a lyric from a Kanye West rap tune. Seems OK to me.

"I'm finna talk about my mama if y'all don't mind /I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi /Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold /You fixed me up something that was good for my soul /Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl? "

– "Hey Mama" from Late Registration

I watched SNL too, I usually record it and watch until the news. Read about the Kanye BS and figured I should stick it out and see what was going on. I liked some of his older stuff, at least a song or 2. What I saw was unwatchable. Also, wtf was going on with the girls outfit?

ckcarr 10-03-2018 02:01 PM

I like all music, blues, rock, country, rap, hip-hop... As long as there's one good song...

Well, except for jazz... Can't stand it. Makes me feel like I'm waiting for something that never comes...

I couldn't stand to listen to more than a few seconds of a Die Antwoord "song" and I would consider anybody that enjoys their music to either be mentally defective or socially undesirable.

IMO Die Antwoord is performance art, it's not 'music.' I like the look and vibe of the short movies and videos, and I think the music reflects the -strange vibe of the whole weird world they've created with it all. So I appreciate it for that, because I don't think it's a thing that some idiot just falls into; it does require some critical skill.

Listening to the music for fun? Well, no I'm not listening to Die Antwoord at dinner parties.

javadog 10-03-2018 03:51 PM

I'm glad you don't listen to their "music" but I can't stand the fact that they look like two crackheads, and they're constantly doing things like flipping off the viewer. I just don't get the attitude and if somebody like that showed up at my front door, my dog would get some exercise.

I'm generally live and let live, but once you get much below trailer trash, I get a little crotchety.

How about one of the original hard rock/rap mashups...

This is pretty good..

Got to love this.

Snoop Dog called Kayne an 'Uncle Tom."

Snoop Dog has changed his name for a third time now. As of the Social media crap I have be reading since yesterday... He has now changed his name to "Moon Cricket."

New age jazz. Whoa. I’m more musical if I dump out my kitchen utensil drawer.
