Tell me about some of the excuses you have gotten when people owe you money.

Im dealing with 3 deadbeats right now.
One customer took her car after hours with an extra key. Really wanna just take her to the magistrate, but I know her Dad, and I'm treading lightly. For now .
Her old phone was not working properly , not allowing her access to her e mail, her husband was supposed to pay me, she lost her phone and never got any of my messages. She stopped by at 6:45 am today, but I was not here. Her paycheck did not clear the bank yet. I left my credit card in my car, Ill call you at lunch time . Bla , bla bla .
One tenant, who lost her job , they day after she moved in, has hurt her back, her car was stolen, and then impounded, Her old roomate broke in and stole her unemployment check . A crooked co worker misdirected her back pay. She has been busy volunteering, and has not made it to the bank yet .
Its almost fun to string them along, and see what they come up with next .
Id be fine with " Hey Fred, I think you are a push over, and I am never going to pay you" .
Got any good ones ?

When I was fresh out of college in 1978, I was in a bank mgt. training program, rotating through different departments, including Collections. One excuse I got was from a woman, who said her husband had Legionaire's Disease (remember that?). Sad thing was, that he actually did have it.

I have some rental properties. I used to manage them. I was awful at it.

The BS people gave me drove me to a rage. So I hired a professional manager.

They all paid up. My stress is much less.

Bottom line? I would call and tell them they have one chance. One. Weeks end you turn them into collections.

It will feel good. I promise.

"I forgot my wallet."

"I'll pay you back tomorrow." (After promising up and down to be repaid that day.)

"You wanted that back?" (After promising up and down to pay me back.)

I don't loan people money anymore.

I only loan money to people I would rather not see again.

Otherwise it is a gift.

I helped manage a couple rentals for a family friend and you know the saying "easier to ask forgiveness than permission"? That was the opposite for the owner. If atenant didn't pay, he would move forward with eviction and never bat an eye no matter the excuse. Most thought he was a heartless bastard but the few times someone came to him ahead if time and was honest, he would bend over backwards to help, payment plan, more time, etc. Decent way to live it you all me.

My favorite is when they say:

"Well Jim owes me money, so you can get it from him".
As if the debt was transferrable.

It's also fun when people want to borrow tools:
Nope.
Don't loan tools.
Never get em back.
I know you're different but no.
Yes I trust you but no.
Doesn't matter if I hurt your feelings, NO.
OK, leave a valid credit card and ID and you can borrow it.
Yes, I am serious.

The only money owed to me is owed to my company by other companies that are tons bigger than my little two man partnership company.

The number one excuse we get is "we will pay you as soon as our customer pays us." Of course, we did not fly it for their client, we fly it for them. And they are marking it up and adding other services so the final bill is way bigger than out part.

Hands down our favorite client, pays all their bills within 10 days of getting the invoice. When they call and ask can we get.... We just answer an empathetic YES. Whatever it is, we can get it done for you.

Lady wanted to borrow my jumper pack a few months back. She was all salty when I told her no, that I use it all the time, and cannot really go without it for the day ( she wanted to take it to work, because her battery was dead, and she did not have enough coin for a new one ) .
I lent her my good shop jumper cables. Still have not seen them back yet .

I tried to help the daughter of one of the odd renters we had twenty years ago. Thought she needed a hand up.

So we sold her an old Toyota Tercel for an extraordinarily low price...and she was to work off that price by helping on the farm.

Gone in a week.

I called the police and haven't heard a thing in two decades.

To friends and family who want to borrow money: "Although I don't expect I'll ever see this money again I want you to understand that this is not a gift"

Unfortunately one of the worst is Disney/ ABC (sorry HughR). Trying to collect on some past due invoices I call them:
Me: "I'm calling about these past due invoices, they are over 30 days and one is over 60"

Disney: "Oh we never pay in 30 days. We changed our payment terms to 90 days"

Me: "But all our customers are on a net 30"

Disney: "I'm sorry, we changed our payment terms"

Me: "So did we. You guys are now on COD until you bring your account up to date. A check will be required before your shows can pick up"

^^^ Gotta love dueling T&Cs.

If you really want to get their attention, forget COD and put `em on credit hold.
