Remove primer from on top of paint without hurting the finish?

Who ever owned my old plow truck , felt the need to spray bomb halfway down both sides to cover up some really ugly rust issues.
The problem is, that they covered up about 2 ft of area , where the paint was still decent.
I do not plan on painting this truck this season, only patching holes, and making it roadworthy, so in an effort to make it look a little better, I would like to get rid of as much of this primer as I can. The original paint is buffing up decent so far .
I am next to positive, that it is only el cheapo murhpys mart, spray can primer.
I was able to wet sand through quite a bit of it, but it is an arduous task. I would love to find a quicker way, but I a m up for it if I have to wet sand through all of it.
Think I can quick wipe it off with laquer thinner without pulling the paint underneath off ?

If the base (original) paint was catalyzed then wiping the el. cheapo primer off with thinner should work fine.

Test a small area and see if the original paint gets soft...

Will definitely be quicker than sanding and polishing.

Send a message via AIM to stomachmonkey
Prep it and rattle can blend it with correct OEM color code.

Fred, the old truck may be and probably is enamel. If the primer comes off by swiping with acetone, then do that carefully. The enamel can stand up to the attack momentarily. YMMV

Thanks for the advice guys, I sucked it up, and wet sanded through a bunch of it . It actually is coming off pretty quick . It looks decent enough for what I need it for . Now, just gotta get some patch panels, and I will only have to paint the bottom 6 maybe 8 inches .
