The mystery of USB

Yes I am a tech but in my naivete I just presumed all USB was backward compatible. So I bought one of those all in one PC's because space was tight. It is pretty cool except the USB ports are on the back, no biggie just get a USB hub to put the ports out front right? Don't care about the mouse and keyboard but also don't want to go hunting around the back of the monitor every time I want to transfer files with a thumb drive.
I asked this question on the internet and started a firestorm, yes, yes, yes, NO!, YES!
Thing is we have a drawer full of USB drive some of which could go as far back as 1.0.

And yes I now fire wire is better , blah, blah, blah...

I've never had an issue plugging in an older USB drive.

Won't hurt to try it.

Windows7 won't recognize my SSD external drives plugged into the front.
Have to plug them into the 2.0 port in back. (part of the motherboard)

For flight sim gaming I also use a few splitter-extenders for USB hardware (mouse, keyboard, speakers, joystick, throttle, pedals, TrackIR, plus a few HDs, etc).
I kept crashing during FSX RedBull air racing until I switched to external view and realized the throttle was also controlling the rudder but that was fixed via game software settings.
The USB assignments gets confused sometimes and the OS will start looping into connect/disconnect mode if they are not arraigned in a certain order.

There are the "low" and "high" voltage/amps
Front ports are usually low voltage so you can't use things like a Hard Drive or a USB hub (unless has a separate power source).
Those USB ports with Blue inside (if the manuf. followed standard) are 2.0 or 3.0 and supposedly are "high".
USB ports on Laptop are a crapshots, you never know what you got... until you try to use it.

Problem lies that manufactures do as they wish and not follow any best practice

Yup

USB ports can supply differing levels of juice.

The front “convenience” ports are usually low power suitable for keyboards and mice but not drives or hubs.

USB
Only one way the plug will work
Two possible ways the plug could go in
Always takes three attempts to get it to fit

... and why does Windows have to reinstall a mouse or key board if you plug it into a different port?

USB-C is a whole lot easier/better. You can plug it in either way.

And when something falls off the desk or you forget to unplug, it irreparably bends in a much cleaner fashion!
