I do have to say that one of the reasons I liked Porsche was their reputation as a giant killer. The plucky little independent German automaker that managed to consistently take down racing giants. Little cars with small displacement engines that won races by being lightweight, well engineered, and reliable. Their cars weren't cheap, but by the standards of the day, you also didn't have to be rich to afford one either. People bought Porsches to drive and enjoy, rain or shine. None of that applies to today's Porsche, and it's also probably why their new cars don't really appeal to me. I'm sure becoming a German Ferrari is great for the profit margins, but it's also not a club that I care to associate with.

Note that I’d still happily drive a 997 or earlier assuming I could find something reasonably priced. The new ones just aren’t appealing, ESPECIALLY for the money.

Meh, things change, especially when you're talking about 2 things that are 60 YEARS apart.

You've also got to think about, back then, all of the cars were hand assembled, so leaving stuff off of the car actually did make the car cheaper (less stuff and less time to assemble it). These days when everything is done on an assembly line, putting out a few odd cars that are different from the majority, actually does cost the company more to make because they have to make new items in small batches and separate these items from the rest and probably mostly hand assemble them.

You know, it really does boil down to what you like and what's important to you. A long time buddy & I usually get together after Cindy & I get done playing pool, the 3 of us going out for a bite.

Marty is a bit older than I, owns 32 residential rental properties in the Salem area, all paid for. On paper, I'm sure he's quite successful. He still has his '58 Speedster, a TTOD car during his autocross days...late 60's, early 70's. I haven't seen the car in years...it's stored somewhere. Marty's only "driver" is an early 90's Toyota Tacoma.

Last night, he asked if I'd rather have Jim's $100,000 Ferrari or his $300,000 Speedster. Jim being a friend of Marty's I've never met who recently bought a Ferrari I've never seen, so don't ask me the model..I don't remember.

I answered that I didn't want either of them. I wanted a car like I had...one yielding decent performance over the roads I drive. One that would take us comfortably over both 2 lane blacktop and a crowded I-5 during a wet rainy day and that is not so valuable that I'd be afraid of leaving in unattended while I'm inside a pool hall, enjoying some time knocking balls around. I also didn't want a car that is a hassle to care for.

Hey, nobody is right or wrong here. Marty has made his life (and car) choices. So has his friend Jim, and so have I.

I really didn't know they kept making them past 2011 until I started looking it up. Apparently they have overcome some of their impracticality.

From that link:

A button on the centre console releases it by the windscreen header, you get out - sorry about that, traffic light show-offs - detach the end ‘fins’ on the rear lid and clip them into little apertures, open the rear lid, stow hood, close cover flaps…

It’s easier and faster than it sounds, honest.

Really the Boxster Spyder is closer to the essence of what the original Speedster was. Lighter weight, low options count, higher performance. The Spyder has been frequently referred to as Porsche’s best driver’s car, probably why even the 987 based models aren’t cheap. Walter Rohl has one as a personal car, that says something.

Just a quick search on the 'Net shows that a bunch of the 2011 models that are up for sale are "asking" $50-65k, but then they are also cars with only 5-6k miles. The 2015-16 models with the 3.8L are going for >$100k. I'd assume that if you could find a 2011 model with 20-50k miles (if they exist) you could probably pick one up for closer to $40k. I just don't know if anyone drives a spyder that much unless maybe it's someone in Cali where they never worry about rain.
