Saw the original Queen with Freedie in Boston decades ago, what a showman!SmileWavy |
Just got back from seeing it. A great film in the sense of Shape of Water or name 20 other really great movies from the last few years? No. But a great movie that is truly enjoyable to watch that really engaged you and made you want more, something that at some point made you remember the real life ending and that it's coming soon, a movie that really grabbed you by heart with Disney's albeit PG, sympathetic portrayal of Mercury? Yeah, it's that movie. Truly enjoyed it. And seeing how the songs were created, that made it just a little more special. Definitely worth $13 and a few hours.

Never had the opportunity to see them luve. They may have not told the entire story of Freddie’s life in the movie , but they certainly captured his energy. |
I really want to see this movie. Freddie Mercury was at the peak of his pluckiness, and strut when he played for Live Aid in 1985 (I remember watching them live in 85). Truly an entertainer, and a vocal range that is hard to match.

Thanks for the reviews and input. I look forward to seeing it at some point.
For all you fans of Queen.....this concert in 1992 is a good one to have but get the VHS because they cut a bunch of stuff out when they made the DVD. You can get the VHS on eBay. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/JrUAA...2d/s-l1600.jpg |

I liked it a lot. I'm a Queen fan - saw them here in ATL about 10 years ago when they were touring with Bad Company's lead singer Paul Rodgers.
The movie does take liberties with some of the timeline and actual story - but overall I thought it was great. It definitely skirts around on Freddie's lifestyle - only has a few scenes where his "gayness" shows up, as it was limited to keep the family friendly PG 13 rating. |
i won't waste any of my time or money on it.

However, I was there with my wife, step daughter and her boyfriend. The SD bought the tickets. I took said SD to see the real deal at Irvine Meadows, Orange County CA in '84 when she was 12. Billy Squire opened and that's why I was there. When BS's set was done I said, "Well good enough, let's go home." Nothing doing, and after a lengthy set up Queen came out and blew the surrounding landscape to oblivion. Tremendous show with a stunning laser display — my first. That was also the first rock concert that the SD went to. So it came full circle last night with her taking me. I'll bet there were less than 30 people in a 3:45 showing at the Imax. Sure glad I took ear plugs. What's with that? Even the dialog was way too loud as well as too much. Play the damn songs. Pass the ear plugs, please |
I think I'll wait until it comes out on Netflix. I like Queen, never had a chance to see them live. I have a friend Peter who plays drums for the top Queen cover band, check them out if they are ever in your area... Queen Nation - A Tribute to the Music of Queen - Meet The Band

Another great aspect of the film was using the songs to drive or reinforce the plot line.
In that sense, it was like a musical, except with non-****ty music. |

The idea that anyone connected to the movie would allow anyone to make a R rated version is ludacris. The band and the members of the crew that knew protected Freddie from the media. The band quit doing any sort of interviews long before he got sick because of the media hatchet jobs. Mary Austin probably would use some of her many millions to protect Freddie's memory even today. |
At virtually every organized bicycle ride, they end up playing "Bicycle Race". I would have preferred if they played "Fat Bottom Girls"...

Are there any critics who actually know music and know what they're talking about?
The film is not called Freddy Mercury, so I don't care what they said about him, or pointless forays into his private life, which is just that, private. I'd like to see this film, but I'm hoping it's about the music and the band. There are many good rocumentaries out there and I'm hoping this explores Queen like those. Examples like: Neil young, the Eagles, Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, led Zeppelin, the greatful dead, Joe cocker, George Harrison, the doors, thin lizzy, Janis Joplin, etc. |

It is primarily a movie about him, and he really did fall into wanton excesses. He did have some sort of return to sanity after he contracted AIDS, but I'm not sure this is the kind of movie you are after. Not a whole lot of man on man action, but they do not hide the fact that it was happening, or that he was a sad and somewhat troubled individual, who was also immensely talented. The musical side is very entertaining, very well done, and worth seeing. There is a real documentary about Queen and their music, if you are interested in that. |
