You are not chasing a predator away from a food source, going away from a nice steady source of dogs and cats to eat is not something you are going to teach them. Nice people think feeding them like a stray dog is not going to end badly, or more likely don't think.

Craig, hold it out in front of you next time you get one and take a photo, between you and the camera, and it will look almost wolf size

This is a huge problem, people leaving cat/dog food out attracts them.

I'm not a biologist but they report that the more you kill them the more they reproduce.

20-30 yards? My wife saw one trotting down the alley when she was pulling out of the garage.

Yes, but not out where I live. I can see only maybe four houses from my place. The closest is a couple of hundred yards. Some of the places around here boarder on Forest Service land. Mine doesn't, but the boundary isn't that far away. In fact there is the beginning of a feral pig area (on the Forest Service map) a mile away from me. Everybody around here has the same impression. We've had a succession of dry years. This past year we only received a third of average. Maybe that's a significant factor.
