Your insurance may cover it. Also, if you have AAA coverage check with them - they covered some costs for me that insurance wouldn't touch (impound fee, etc. and AAA offered to pay hotel and/or rental if needed since I was out of town)

A driveway gate might be a good idea, but short of that you might consider a driveway alert. I got one made by Chamberlain, not expensive (I think around $60) and positioned it at the head of my driveway. It transmits a signal when something activates it to a small base in the house that makes a sort of beeping sound three times. The volume is adjustable, and the base has a back up battery. It's handy for letting you know when visitors, delivery, etc. arrive. My driveway isn't too long - around 150 ft. - but it transmits the signal something like an eighth of a mile. My wife likes it a lot. It does go off when a coyote, deer, or bird activates it, or a week gets blown across the driveway. (I know what time of the evening that coyote usually makes his rounds.) I can't remember how many years it's been out there. Another thing I did was to buy one of those cheap motion sensor alarms at H.F. I painted the sender part green, covered the little light hole, and put it on a tree pointing to my little road below the house where it wouldn't be set off by wind blowing plants. I put the receiver part under the eves of one of my sheds. So if somebody passes it, they can year the alarm going off. I think that would deter most people wandering where they shouldn't.

Consider yourself lucky for being able to live in the 50s and 60s not needing to lock cars and your home for as long as you did. Unfortunately you just caught up with the rest of us.

Have had two locked cars broken into. One by a local tweaker and one by a loser petty criminal. Have had our mail stolen until got a locking box. And I live out in the country, right up the street from a person who killed six family members about six years ago. Welcome to the modern reality.
