Can cell phones be tracked with location services turned off?

Asking for a friend

AFAIK it can be tracked anytime it is on.

If a new SIM card and number negate tracking. In other words is a new phone needed as well!

or even off I presume (via cell tower location). Location service (disabled on mine) just advertises to the world via browsers....no biggie .

has to be on.
cell towers can triangulate your location.

wife and use to love the old magnum PI show so we are trying to accept the new one. funny thing about it every episode so far has had some outrageous BS scene in it. like last night magnum said "check his cell phone to see where he has been".
now AFAIK there is NO WAY to look at my cell phone itself and see where I have been. all that has to be done through the cell company and cell tower triangulation.

first episode BS, he is looking thru a file cabinet, does not know what he is looking for but the second file he picks up is "the one"

And Google and Apple still save all of your location data even if you have location turned off. The only thing that does is not supply the information to other applications.

If it's on it's broadcasting it's IMEI and can be tracked.

In fact, I can grab a random strangers IMEI and within a second or two know their name and tons of other stuff they may not want me to know.

The only way to have a chance at anonymity is buy a "burner" cell phone with cash. And buy it while wearing a hat, and look down a lot, or from a friend that bought it for you. Even then, once "they" get the number that can find the locations it was used.

Semi accurate.

Apple does save location data but it stays on the phone and is encrypted.

They don’t see it or have access to it as the device is the only place the unique encryption hash exists.

This. I have a smart phone that has never been registered. Its a Tracfone . Never downloaded any apps. No Google account. They could follow the phone but never know who they are tracking. No reason for it. I have nothing to hide. It just bothers me that Big Brother is watching at all times.

Except if it can't be used in proximity of any camera, and needs to be turned off and put in a Faraday box miles away before returning home .

because:
-they bounced the built in RFID off other devices in the home like the toaster or thermostat connectivity or even your government-mandatory smart meter.

-your phone is paired with any other devices in direct proximity.

-and it's pinged constantly(SOP) and they know that phone sits for 10 hours every night at coordinates xx, the house which belongs to Mr. James Wilson, who gets a rent check from Bob Burnhart on the first, with that same address written in the notation box of the check received.

-and since warrants are not even needed for Wireshark tower spoofing even beat cops can now listen in and masterbate while you phone sex the gf.

-and Bob(you) drives a GM with On-Star with standard built-in remote unlockable doors so let's go through all your stuff while you are gone. And we know when you are gone. And we double secret promise with sprinkles on top we would never ever abuse our omnipotent power you keep giving us whenever you buy more surveillance crap.

What you say is true. My thought is someone would have to know that I even have a cell phone. Most people think I just have a landline. Not many have the cell number. I am not hiding from anything but I prefer to be unavailable sometimes.

Just toss the phone in speeder’s trunk while you dissolve the body in the tub of lye in Island’s basement. That’s what I do.

Edit: I’d do.

Earlier in the day push the phone down the back seat of a taxi if you are ever getting up to something you shouldn't.
