What are your thoughts on gm killing off the cruze and impala .

Seems like cars are going to be a thing of the past . Hard to fathom Chevrolet not selling a simple , affordable, economical passenger car .

I miss my '66 Impala SS. What's a Cruze? :p

jcommin 11-26-2018 03:01 PM

sign of the times - Ford is moving away from passenger cars too. The 65 Impala is my favorite. You either stay/get competitive or close up shop. The Hamtramck and Oshawa facilities are huge -

When it was time to buy a new DD, I did not consider a "simple , affordable, economical passenger car".
Not interested. Doesn't make sense.

I looked at pick-up trucks and SUVs, and lots of people do the same.

A lot of it is because the underlying engineering regulations and requirement involved has changed.

The "small SUV shape" meets regulations better than the sedan.

The end user has a more versatile vehicle, and the manufacturer spends less.

They're also phasing out the Cadillac CT6, and Buick La Crosse. I think the Volt is also on the list.
They're closing the GM Oshawa Plant that's just east of Toronto.
They're also closing 2 plants in Michigan and one in Ohio.
The closings takes effect in Dec. 2019.
According to news reports car sales are down, crossovers are taking the place of the car models they have now.

Impossible to compete with the Korean small/econo cars. No one cares if they're seen in a Korean chitbox or an American made chitbox anymore so GM is choosing to stop punching themselves in the face.

Far as I', concerned, the old GM should have gone into bankruptcy instead of being taken over by the federal government.

Anyway, no skin off my nose. With the takeover, GM went off my list.

After a huge tax break, they are still eliminating jobs.:(

I'm looking into a new vehicle and the RAV4 hybrid gets 39mpg... I'm having a hard time justifying a sedan when I'll get the utility of a crossover without losing the efficiency.

I can see why sedans are going the way of the dinosaurs

My first car, yeah, I miss it (although, by now, it would probably be held together by bondo if it still exists).

I'd like to have another, but it seems pretty unlikely.

I'm a bit surprised they are killing off the Impala. I'd think that there is still a desire for a "full-size", but I guess people buy SUVs instead. The Cruze? Whatever.

Six years ago a certain dude in the White House said he’d buy a Volt when he left office. Now it’s dead...

BeyGon 11-26-2018 07:12 PM

I won't miss them, Hertz and Avis will just get some different rental cars.

LakeCleElum 11-26-2018 07:57 PM

It's my fault......I haven't bought a vehicle made by the Big 3 since 1968...........Japanese and German for many years now..........

JackDidley 11-26-2018 08:10 PM

Chevy is dumping cars I dont care about. Ford is doing the same. Of course if they only made cars that I care about, everybody would be driving 2 seaters with lots of power.:D:D

herr_oberst 11-26-2018 08:18 PM

Car and Driver and Autoweek tried to get readers excited about the Cruz and the Impala (and the Volt) but, as an enthusiast they were about as exciting as the plate of green Jello inside a refrigerator.
Fortunately, Chevy is still hitting home runs with the Camaro and the 'Vette, so my lifelong appreciation for some GM products can continue.
(I grew up in a time when you were a Ford guy or a Mopar guy or a Chevy guy. I liked the bowtie.)

WPOZZZ 11-26-2018 08:28 PM

Even the cops aren't using Impalas.

BeyGon 11-26-2018 08:47 PM

I see mostly Tahoes

WPOZZZ 11-26-2018 09:05 PM

In my neck of the woods, the marked patrol cars are Ford Interceptor sedans and SUVs. We also have subsidized cars that are privately owned by the cops. The majority of those are 4Runners.
