Ive be been practicing living real life, and less forum life. There is just so much to see and do, I don’t want to get all caught up in forum drama that much anymore. :)

So, new hobby time. I went and bought all new lightweight surf casting stuff. There is a crazy surf-perch population right near my home. I am hooked! I went solo today and knowing jack-squat about surf fishing; I managed to catch six! I I do think the buddy system is a good practice. The waves freaked me out a bit today. I have new chest waders coming in the mail. I need to refine my gear somewhat, like fisherman pliers with great braided line cutters. I might wuss out completely and buy a life vest.

My first ocean perch. He put up a good fight in the waves with my light tackle. I do think I need a good new one size up rod/reel. Hucking a 1oz sinker felt oddly dangerous.

Any good fishing forums out there? (In green font)

If you are surf fishing solo, and your waders get flooded with water it might not be a happy ending.. unless you have some mad skillz...

I've surf fished on and off for 30+ years, in some crazy places.... the rocks off Montauk Point... even if you are fishing with buddies... getting knocked from your perch, having the waders fill with water gets effing serious..And add all the other crap you may have fastened to yourself..

An Epirb isn't a bad idea also depending on the currents and surf where you fish..

With an Epirb they can find the body

Nice barred perch. Get a steamer. Clean and scale him. Cut a few slices through the skin. Cover it with chopped cilantro and fresh chopped ginger. Steam whole for 15 min and put on some white rice. Eat with chop sticks. YUM.

I surf fish a often in Ventura. A good wader belt is a MUST! I don't wear waders in the summer, but do in the winter. I've gone down and been dragged in a couple times. A tight waste belt will significantly slow the water filling the waders and should give you time to get your feet down or swim back to the sand bar. A cheap fix.

Wait until you get your first legal halibut. It's better than Christmas.

Seems to me a wet suit "farmer john" bottom would be a hell of a lot safer than waders.

Yes absolutely... Many of the crazy guerilla fisherman who sim to the rock off Montauk,, are in wetsuits...That is a crazy obsession to get a nice bass...

I don't like to eat surf perch. Can you follow up with how you cook it and how it tasted? I have eaten the silver one you show and rainbow perch, both were mealy and not that great in flavor. Any rock fish, cabezon, ling cod etc. will run circles around it in terms of eating ... for those you will need a kayak. So your life vest will be worth the investment. :)

My family had a cabin down in Yachats...probably too far south for you. Shore there consists of old volcanic flow...So as a kid I did lots of poke pole fishing At low tide, easy to get a mussle & crack open for bait. Traditional poke poles were simply bamboo, a short length of hooked line tied to it. Go a mile or so north of Yachats, sandy beach for surf fishing.

I've been wanting to do this too. It's a very short walk to the beach in Half Moon Bay for me. I see other people do it, but they don't even get their feet wet. They cast out into the surf and reel in their catch while standing above the waves. So no need for waders, as far as I can see.

Couldn't agree more...thus the pole pole. Well, according to those in the family who ate fish. I have a weird allergy...shortly after eating fish I'm like a cat barfing a hair ball. Fresh or salt water fish, no difference.

Surf fishing is super fun. Couple of shots of my 90 year old Dad at Myrtle Beach.

The fishin' sucks at Myrtle Beach....unless yer a teen :). Used to surf (and pier) fish the NC beaches as a kid...when you could walk for miles, either direction...and pick an isolated spot...no wading way out...usually, no waders necessary...harmony without humans!
