Web pages becoming nearly unusable due to ads and videos all over
Is it just my older laptop (three years old), or are the web pages becoming so crammed full of junk these days that the pages become almost useless?
For me, if I click on basically any big news website, or basically ANY big website, I can barely get the page to scroll so I can try to actually read whatever it is I'm trying to read. Videos pop up all over, and banner ads are starting to populate nearly all edges and corners of the page. It gets so aggravating that I basically say F U to the website and leave it. It seems that only the message boards are remotely usable these days. Are you guys seeing this too? Or is it just my older laptop not able to handle the barrage of junk thrown at me within every web page? |
I had the same issue and installed an Ad Blocker. It really helped.
|
Yes and No.
Yes, most sites, especially big sites and news sites are like that. No, I don't have that problem because I'm using Firefox with the an ad-blocker and Noscript which kills most of that crap in it's tracks. It does occasionally make things more difficult, especially when it's new or when you go to a new page, but for me, it's completely worth it. |
Redbeard, which one do you use?
|
Steve, I can use Firefox, if needed. Do the ad-blocker and Noscript come pre-installed in the browser, or do I need to get them as ad-ons? If so, which ad-blocker do you like?

Even with that most 'news' sites will tell a story that normally would populate 1 page. Now, they show short paragraph / picture and then you have to scroll through 8 additional pages filled with ads and crap. I hate it, so I pass when that looks like its going down a 10 web page road.

Some sites require you to disable AdBlock before you can proceed. When I get that message, I just say sorry and I am gone.
|
AdBlock however more and more ads are getting past it lately. Go onto Yahoo and even though it will block 28 ads, every 'article' box on the side is an ad that's gotten through.
|
Ublock Origin and Ghostery here on Firefox. Though I still hate the Firefox Quantum update.
|
I have not seen a single ad in the last 5 years.
+1 for AdBlockPlus. |
FireFox, uBlock Origin and NoScript
AdBlock plus sold out - they will lets ads through for advertisers that are willing to pay up. |

There are some new browsers you can try that have ad blocking, and script blocking built in..
Look at Vivaldi and/or Brave.. I agree it really frosts me when a site asks me to allow it because of my adblocker.... its then buh bye.. |
Don't forget about the stealthy super-cookies. Very difficult to remove...
|
Opera browser with built in ad blocker.
Works as well as and often better than Adblock. |
Ok. I installed AdBlock Plus an hour ago, and it’s really helped a lot. However, I think I’ll give uBlock Origin and NoScript a shot.
|
We are also seeing a lot of crypto mining on websites these days. Use Cisco Umbrella to block them
|
I’ll add that too
|
Yep, Rennlist is now an adsuck site...

Timely thread! I have been struggling with Chrome freezing. Just added Adguard and it's humming along now. I was using Edge because it was able to power through better than Chrome which was becoming unusable.

Drives me bonkers that these days, most computing is vertical, but most monitors are horizontal. For quite a while now I've been using various add-ons for FF to allow me to place my tab list on the side vs the top. and now you know why, I now have 8 new tabs queued up for later today with reading on various new browsers. Even if not, I'll still probably try them both because that's how I roll. :D |
I decided to go with uBlock origin, and so far I must say I am very impressed. I'm a Chrome user.
Thanks for the advice folks. I knew I could count on the vast wealth of broad knowledge available here. |

The above link is a head to head. Both are excellent, but they give the nod to Ublock Origin. |
If you use Facebook, install https://www.fbpurity.com/

I'll have to give uBlock Origin a shot to see if there's a big difference in memory usage. People are reporting that it's much less, so it doesn't hurt to try!

I loaded Ublock origin and Noscript two days ago based on this thread. I disabled them today. I got tired of having to go through every single site and enabling whatever it took to see pictures of items while shopping, pictures associated with news articles (Marketwatch for example, etc.)
One site I had to enable something special to actually see the text of the article. |
I disabled noScript for the reason that it greatly hindered useability. UBlock is making me very happy.
