owl party central
Just came from the back yard... there are 4 to 6 owls within a block or so of my house all hootin' up a storm. Used to hearing one or two fairly frequently, its like a social circle out there tonight.

Have a big cottonwood in my backyard that is pretty much the tallest tree around. Have lived here for a little over 20 years and there have always been great horned owls in that tree.
Only really hear hoot fests in the fall when they are pairing up for nesting. The it is from dark to 11-12pm. One evening this fall caught my golden retriever sitting about 15 ft out from our stockade fence. There was an owl on top of one of the brick fence posts. The dog would make talking noises, not barking or whining, then the owl would hoot back. They went thru about 10 exchanges then the dog trotted off and the owl flew back up into the tree top. Don't understand animal, but they must have been discussing night hunting rights. My golden rarely if ever went out to chase the opossum or anything else at night after that. Actually think it is kinda neat because I had a pet great horned owl from when I was 8 until 20.

Owls are great. I have one that arrives at my place in northern WI about 9:30 on summer evenings, just as it is getting dark. It hangs just inside the tree line and hoots up a storm for an hour or so. Nice way to drift off to sleep at night....

We used to have a number of owls around that would have regular whoooing contests up & down the canyon but haven't heard any for some time. We don't have much around except for deer, rabbits, hawks, & ravens (and not many of them compared to before). One of the ugliest sounds I've heard was a juvenile owl some years ago. It was still being attended by the parents and made a horrible screeching sound alternated with whooing. It reminded me of a kid going through the voice change.
