What do 50,000 poinsettias look like?

I got invited to see a local small businessman's operation yesterday. He buys tiny pointsettia plants in August and grows them out for sale at this time of the year. He has sold his entire crop, mostly wholesale, but about 10% retail. It's great to see such an ambitious young couple working so hard to succeed..

Next week they will all be individually wrapped for sale.

A couple dozen high school kids will stand by this conveyor working 12 hour shifts to pack them all up in ONE WEEK!

My college roommate and friend owns the big greenhouse here in Denver; I remember during Christmas time we used to go out there and it was very similar. Cool stuff!!!

There's a Red House over yonder...

How many syllables are in poinsettias when you pronounce it ?

Very cool. My grandmother ran a floral shop and greenhouse in North Dakota. He small house was directly attached to it. We would occasionally go there for Christmas. It was a crazy juxtaposition walking into the shop and feeling the rush of humidity and exotic smells after trudging through the snow outside. It was like going from the North Pole to the Amazon in 3 seconds.

Hey Patrick......thanks for the post/thread and super nice photos! That nurseryman really keeps his operation clean and tidy. There's a couple places in my area that do the same, although the one here in town closed up earlier this year because the owner retired. Although I'm a big plant "nut", I've never really like Points that much. That said....those tricolor ones in the 8" pots in your photos are pretty spiffy.

Here are a few older pics I took from the place that closed here....he always had a lot of different crops to choose from. In these pics Geraniums, Sunpatiens, and Purslane baskets....

As a teen I once worked in a indoor Michigan warehouse about half the size of that last pic.
Enclosed/insulated and lit by grow lights to maintain.
Lots of variety (mini trees lots of palms etc).
It was probably a temporary drop-off distribution point from some origination southern grow site.
They leased plants and decorations to local office buildings in town and maintained them.

The owners had some serious personal coinage but were also smart and did good business.

I always think "How great would it be to have one of these attached to the back of my house!"

As in a conservatory:
