I was on JBER for quake. Quite the ride. The office I work at had no damage. But binders are everywhere. Cube next to my office had the ceiling fixture, air vent and a couple ceiling tiles fall. Luckily the guy was not there. After checking to make sure everyone was accounted for, we were released. Long drive home because of a few signal lights being out. I live in South Anchorage and we had no damage. Only lost a few glass items. A few shelves dumped all their contents, so lots of books and photo albums to cleanup. Schools are already cancelled through Tuesday next week. Across town there are no significant injuries. A couple structure fires. less than 5000 without power. Biggest issue is driving around town and really bad driving north out of town. One bridge out at Eagle River, part of one section of highway gone due to slope failure.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543616902.jpg

Be safe, and good luck. And watch out for aftershocks.
When you have had a big one such as this there are usually some fairly big aftershocks. |
Glad everyone is OK. One of my neighbors is from Alaska. He wife was transferred here for a few years. His office back in Anchorage suffered internal damage (everything in the office scrambled), but the building is OK. He lost contact with his mother for many hours until she could get into a cell service area.

I thought the earthquake would come in CA..

Live in Eagle River. Just outside anchorage. Was quite a ride today. After shocks keep rolling in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543646647.jpg

You were the first person I thought of, on hearing the news. Glad you all are dealing with this so well. |
Best to you all....ouch!

Thx to Gawd that all are safe and that Gawds wrath be mild as is his displeasure that Alaska supported Trump and his misogynistic, racist and xenophobic policies.

Are you really so desperate for attention that you feel like you need to compete with a natural disaster ? |

Getting really sick of the aftershocks.
They interviewed the couple in the GMC. They seemed amused by the whole situation. |

Post #46.... Something in the PNW is going to go off... For some reason I think of it as a hot zone..something is fermenting...something is active.. I am drawn to paying attention to that area???? Other than that I do not want to think about it.. |
We are still cleaning up closets. Seems we had too much stuff piled on the top shelves. Most of the shelf contents fell and blocked the bi-fold doors from opening. Of course. each closet now needs to be reorganized. We have a crack in our ceiling that is a little longer and a couple of possibly new popped dry wall nails.
I work for Corps of Engineers, and we are not standing up our Infrastructure Assessment Teams since there isn't enough work inspect. The state is inspecting bridges and will be done soon. Biggest issue is that the main highway coming into town is reduced to a single lane in places. Traffic will be a nightmare for those folks. The municipality is inspecting the schools. Structurally they appear fine, I saw no obvious problems when I drove by my sons high school this morning. But it seems to be taking time to inspect all the systems in the building. So school is cancelled for the week. This fall my daughter lost 4 weeks of school at UNCW and now my son looses a week. Crazy. Almost all of Anchorage was build since the 64 quake. So nearly every structure was built with earthquakes in mind. We survived a 7, because Alaska planned for it. I work in one of the rare older buildings (1948). It survived the 64 quake and did fine in this one. Compared to the 9.2 1964 Good Friday Earth Quake, the energy released by Friday's 7.0 represented less than 1% of the 1964 quake. This was not the big one. This was a wake up call. My family has been very lax recently. So will be packing go bags for the house and cars. The nation needs to focus on other disasters (CA fires). We got this. We will patch a few roads, patch a few walls, and update our response plans. Last night my family and neighbors toasted to our good fortune. We were not looking at a pile of smoking debris that was once our home. We were not searching for pets or loved ones. We are not living in a Walmart parking lot and wondering what we were gong to do next. We were lucky, blessed, fortunate, etc. We got this. |
