7.0...5.8...4.1...4.8

Series of quakes. First one lasted forever. Tsunami warning .

Fun times.

GH85Carrera 11-30-2018 09:15 AM

So fires, mudslides and now an 7.0 earthquake. What is next, a plague of locust? At least the weather in nice most of the time.

dad911 11-30-2018 09:19 AM

Alaska.

varmint 11-30-2018 09:32 AM

Just ran home. Some broken nick nacks. Lost a snow globe, etc. pets are disturbed. Have power. Anchorage tv stations are off the air.

Strange. The lake froze over last week. Now the ice is split cleanly down the center.

Hard to judge time in a quake. But the first one felt like three minutes. Unsettling.

Just went through the emergency kit. Batteries are missing. Suspect the wife and kid consider the remote controls more important than survival in a crisis.

varmint 11-30-2018 09:52 AM

Up in anchorage.

No word of anybody hurt. But we’re all on edge from the aftershocks. No tsunami in Kodiak. So I guess that’s it.

ckelly78z 11-30-2018 10:03 AM

I wonder about a tsunami in some of the outer islands.

widebody911 11-30-2018 10:06 AM

I wonder if it's related to this https://www.sciencealert.com/a-mysterious-seismic-wave-rumbled-earth-and-scientists-can-t-explain-it

Trying to imagine being the driver of that GMC...gawd!

Jim Richards 11-30-2018 10:18 AM

Is it All Wheel Drive?

Reminds me of DC potholes. ;)

Hope all you Alaska folks are alright.

For some reason PP doesn't like .png files. I found you can save them, rename with .jpg, then upload. This is it:

Big news in 1964.

varmint 11-30-2018 12:00 PM

Seems everyone is fine. This state comes pre disastered. Takes a lot to stop us flat.

wdfifteen 11-30-2018 01:01 PM

Just saw this on TV. Holy cow! Do we have any Alaskan pelicans on here besides Varmint? Glad to hear things are OK with you Varmint.

There’s a guy in anchorage, and one in Fairbanks, I think.

Went through the emergency kit. A bunch of batteries missing. Phone charging cable, spare dog leash. Probably some other stuff gone that just doesn’t come to mind.

It’s insane that I have to hide the bug out bag from my family, but looks like that’s the way it’s got to be.

I was on JBER for quake. Quite the ride. The office I work at had no damage. But binders are everywhere. Cube next to my office had the ceiling fixture, air vent and a couple ceiling tiles fall. Luckily the guy was not there. After checking to make sure everyone was accounted for, we were released. Long drive home because of a few signal lights being out. I live in South Anchorage and we had no damage. Only lost a few glass items. A few shelves dumped all their contents, so lots of books and photo albums to cleanup. Schools are already cancelled through Tuesday next week. Across town there are no significant injuries. A couple structure fires. less than 5000 without power. Biggest issue is driving around town and really bad driving north out of town. One bridge out at Eagle River, part of one section of highway gone due to slope failure.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543616902.jpg

Danimal16 11-30-2018 05:49 PM

Scott, good to see you are ok. Best to all of you up there in the North.

That is good news. Always have considered Alaskans with the reverence they deserve. Best to all up there.

+2......glad to hear you all are OK......I can't imagine what it's like going through one of those....and the subsequent aftershocks......

Bill Douglas 11-30-2018 06:01 PM

Be safe, and good luck. And watch out for aftershocks.

When you have had a big one such as this there are usually some fairly big aftershocks.

red-beard 11-30-2018 07:08 PM

Glad everyone is OK. One of my neighbors is from Alaska. He wife was transferred here for a few years. His office back in Anchorage suffered internal damage (everything in the office scrambled), but the building is OK. He lost contact with his mother for many hours until she could get into a cell service area.

I thought the earthquake would come in CA..

Dansvan 11-30-2018 09:45 PM

Live in Eagle River. Just outside anchorage. Was quite a ride today. After shocks keep rolling in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543646647.jpg

Houses foundations collapsed. Lots of broken glass. Power outages. Lots of road damage. But, onwards and upwards.

Thanks for the thread and pict's

You were the first person I thought of, on hearing the news. Glad you all are dealing with this so well.

Thx to Gawd that all are safe and that Gawds wrath be mild as is his displeasure that Alaska supported Trump and his misogynistic, racist and xenophobic policies.

These are the kinds of posts people make when get tired of being on a forum.
Are you really so desperate for attention that you feel like you need to compete with a natural disaster ?

No one has ever accused you of being insightful now have they? You are a purveyor of pc solicitude. Be away with your foul breath knave.

Getting really sick of the aftershocks.

They interviewed the couple in the GMC. They seemed amused by the whole situation.

I can see that. I wonder if they're able to recover it without damaging it.

Something in the PNW is going to go off...

For some reason I think of it as a hot zone..something is fermenting...something is active.. I am drawn to paying attention to that area????

Other than that I do not want to think about it..

PetrolBlueSC 12-02-2018 03:24 PM

We are still cleaning up closets. Seems we had too much stuff piled on the top shelves. Most of the shelf contents fell and blocked the bi-fold doors from opening. Of course. each closet now needs to be reorganized. We have a crack in our ceiling that is a little longer and a couple of possibly new popped dry wall nails.

I work for Corps of Engineers, and we are not standing up our Infrastructure Assessment Teams since there isn't enough work inspect. The state is inspecting bridges and will be done soon. Biggest issue is that the main highway coming into town is reduced to a single lane in places. Traffic will be a nightmare for those folks. The municipality is inspecting the schools. Structurally they appear fine, I saw no obvious problems when I drove by my sons high school this morning. But it seems to be taking time to inspect all the systems in the building. So school is cancelled for the week. This fall my daughter lost 4 weeks of school at UNCW and now my son looses a week. Crazy.

Almost all of Anchorage was build since the 64 quake. So nearly every structure was built with earthquakes in mind. We survived a 7, because Alaska planned for it. I work in one of the rare older buildings (1948). It survived the 64 quake and did fine in this one.

Compared to the 9.2 1964 Good Friday Earth Quake, the energy released by Friday's 7.0 represented less than 1% of the 1964 quake. This was not the big one. This was a wake up call.

My family has been very lax recently. So will be packing go bags for the house and cars.

The nation needs to focus on other disasters (CA fires). We got this. We will patch a few roads, patch a few walls, and update our response plans.

Last night my family and neighbors toasted to our good fortune. We were not looking at a pile of smoking debris that was once our home. We were not searching for pets or loved ones. We are not living in a Walmart parking lot and wondering what we were gong to do next. We were lucky, blessed, fortunate, etc. We got this.
