Wow, why do this to your kid?

"A little girl named Abcde was mocked by a Southwest gate agent."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2018/11/29/little-girl-named-abcde-was-mocked-by-southwest-gate-agent-airline-has-apologized/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.b8679546d9ef

Quote:

A Texas mother is calling out a Southwest Airlines employee who she said mocked her 5-year-old daughter’s name and then posted a picture of the small child’s boarding pass on social media.

Traci Redford told ABC affiliate KABC her daughter’s name is Abcde, which is pronounced “ab-si-dee.”

Redford said the incident occurred several weeks ago when she and her daughter were preparing to board a flight from Santa Ana, Calif., home to El Paso, Tex. Redford told the station that a gate agent at California’s John Wayne Airport saw Abcde’s name and started pointing, laughing and talking to other employees about Redford and her child.

“So I turned around and just said, ‘Hey, I can hear you, so if I can hear you, my daughter can, too. I’d appreciate if you’d just stop,’” she told the station.

She added: “While I was sitting there, she took a picture of my boarding pass and chose to post it on social media, mocking my daughter. It was actually brought to my attention by somebody who had seen it on Facebook and reported it to Southwest Airlines. And after two weeks of doing a formal complaint, Southwest hadn’t done anything.”

[Quiz: Can you tell a popular baby name from a top dog name?]

Redford could not immediately be found for comment Thursday morning by The Washington Post.

Name shaming? This Texas woman claims a @SouthwestAir agent made fun of her 5-year-old daughter's name as they were preparing to board their flight at @JohnWayneAir in Orange County.

Southwest Airlines has since apologized, saying that the social media post is “not indicative of the care, respect, and civility” that the airline requires from its employees.

“We take great pride in extending our Southwest Hospitality to all of our Customers, which includes living by the Golden Rule and treating every individual with respect, in person or online,” a spokesman for the airline said in a statement. “The post is not indicative of the care, respect, and civility we expect from all of our Employees. We have followed up with the Employee involved, and while we do not disclose personnel actions publicly, we are using this as an opportunity to reinforce our policies and emphasize our expectations for all Employees.”

Although Abcde is an unusual name, it’s not unheard of. In 2014, Vocativ reported that over the past three decades, 328 baby girls have been given that name, 32 of whom were born in 2009. But when the name is entered into the Social Security Administration’s database of popular baby names, it states that “Abcde is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth beginning with 2000."

Nicknames include Ce-Ce, Sidy, Abby, Xyzzie, Aebi and Seedy, according to BabyNameWizard.com.

According to Vocativ:

For what it’s worth, the name Abcde seems to be a primarily Hawaiian phenomenon. SSA data indicates that all five of the Abcdes named in 1990 were born there, which is especially interesting, considering that the modern Hawaiian alphabet doesn’t include the consonants b, c or d. A little googling reveals that an Abcde Zoller plays soccer for the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and an Abcde de Coito teaches Zumba classes in the Aloha state. NameCandy’s Name Lady blogger suggests the name may also be relatively common in New Mexico and among Latino families.
What the mother should do is tell her daughter "Because your daddy and I wanted to be different and are morons, we've cursed you to never have your name pronounced correctly and to be laughed at the rest of your life or until you change your name when you are old enough."

I'd forgotten to include this the first time. Now for the big reveal.
Yep, that's the mom and the little girl.

Why in the hell would anyone name their daughter ABCDE ? It was rather insensative of the gate attendent to do that, and out of line as well, but a far bigger problem for the mother to originally name her that.

Poor girl has a life long struggle there.

pwd72s 11-30-2018 10:06 AM

I heard of a boy named Sue.

True story..a couple here named Walker. Named their son Luke. Middle name...well, you guessed it.

Baz 11-30-2018 10:06 AM

Yeah lady....I don't see a problem with naming your child Abcde......

pwd72s 11-30-2018 10:12 AM

Another true one...a mother into old English lit. Named her daughter Beatrice Magnolia Ophillia. Poor kid...:(

Starless 11-30-2018 10:21 AM

When I was working processing film a kid came in top drop off a roll. Last name Kraft, asked him his first, he says "Chris, yeah, my parents have a great sense of humor". Still, not as bad as Abcde...

dafischer 11-30-2018 10:32 AM

She could have named her VWXYZ.

That would have been the name if it was a boy.

KFC911 11-30-2018 10:36 AM

EIEIO .....farmer's kid :)

URY914 11-30-2018 10:39 AM

My wife works at a state university. Some of the names she sees on a daily basis is a shame. Parents have no idea what labeling your kid sets them up for the rest of their lives. Kids come into her office and are embarrassed to state their own names.

Tobra 11-30-2018 10:39 AM

Parents without any imagination or education do this sort of thing. Friend was a schoolteacher and had a student named "Female". Mother had not come up with a name, so she kept the one the hospital gave her. It rhymes with Emily.

john70t 11-30-2018 10:41 AM

Always first in the phone book, and to be called in line.
(edit: Behind Aaron)

stomachmonkey 11-30-2018 10:41 AM

Seems to be a popular name in TX.

I **** you not my wife had an ABCDE as one of her students a few years back.

FWIW, it's not the most unusual one she's had.

EDIT: It's pronounced Ab-se-day

flipper35 11-30-2018 10:46 AM

It may not be one of the most unusual, but it is one of hte most stupid. I bet the mom isn't of Asian heritage either.

Eric at Pelican Parts 11-30-2018 10:56 AM

There's 328 (or more now) people named Abcde in the US.... wow.

URY914 11-30-2018 11:05 AM

What about Xyz?

icemann427 11-30-2018 11:24 AM

The Southwest agent wasn't making fun of the child. She was making fun of the stupid arse of a mother...

asphaltgambler 11-30-2018 11:24 AM

True story - I can beat that. While in the hills of Tennessee over Thanksgiving holiday visiting my wife's parents and other family members.

One of which were my wife's nephew and live in girlfriend. She's about to give birth any day now to a little girl.

Her name? Chevelle Monet H..............n

When they told us this - I should have won the academy award for remaining straight faced under the most difficult of circumstances.

BTW, he works at Wal-Mart, this is baby #2 - she's on public assistance.....

The real question though is if the baby is named after the car or the band. Either way, "Chevelle" is not really a very good name for a girl, but she probably won't be made fun of as much as "Abcde" or "La-a"

Gogar 11-30-2018 11:40 AM

All those kids named Aspen,Hunter, Rain, and Charity are all sad cause they've been one-upped!

rfuerst911sc 11-30-2018 11:41 AM

In this case the mom and dad are just plain stupid . They can dress the name up all they want it still equals stupid ! The only bright spot in the future is their daughter may be the only stripper/ porn star with that name . Friggin knuckle draggers .

asphaltgambler 11-30-2018 11:42 AM

On the drive back to sane-land, Virginia. We joked endlessly about it. I said. " Well she's already got her stripper / porn name......"

Danimal16 11-30-2018 11:46 AM

A great nickname for her would simply be "A C". Hey, what does it matter as long as her parents love her. Hope she has a happy life.

GH85Carrera 11-30-2018 11:55 AM

One of my buddies used to have a dog named Artie. Or that is what I thought it was until I saw the dogs tags. It was RD. It stood for Replacement Dog. Short, simple and funny. But it was dog.

I was lucky growing up with the simple name of Glen. No one ever came up with a twisted version of that for a nick name or insult. It does not rhyme with much, and has no other names tied to it like many names.

Adrian Thompson 11-30-2018 12:03 PM

The worst one I ever heard was on Freakonomics I think. The kid was called '****head' The parents claimed it was pronounced 'Shu-teed' or something like that. I'd call that justifiable homicide if the poor kid goes postal on their parents.

I was at school with one of three sisters who were named Haily, Rainy and Stormy.

Knew a kid named Buffalo when I was growing up. His parents were hippies. This was the 70's.

(Chevelle doesn't strike me as that odd for some reason...)

herr_oberst 11-30-2018 12:12 PM

At least she's not named Dick Trickle.

Tervuren 11-30-2018 12:19 PM

My sister in law went to school with an abcde.

California.

The name isn't new.

And if someone has a unique name, you have to expect attention.

MRM 11-30-2018 12:22 PM

Dick was a hero where I grew up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Trickle

Fortunately for the kid, the chapter on names in Freakonomics said that there's no correlation between a name and the kid's eventual success in life. One example was a family who's father wanted his kids to be successful so much that he named his oldest son Winner. Winner turned out to be a crack dealer and drug addict. The rest of the kids were not much better and by the time the last kid was born the dad had enough. He named the last one Loser. At the time the book was written Loser was either a police or probation officer, I can't remember which, with a supervisory role and very respected in the community. He claimed the name never really bothered him and that most people just called him Lou anyway. Hopefully Miss Alphabet has the same experience.

GH85Carrera 11-30-2018 12:55 PM

There are so many names, why just use letters?

A lot of manes go through a popularity phase and then the next generation comes along. In my dating days I was constantly dating a different "Susan" or "Betty". Now it is rare to hear a kid named that. Ladies from my grandparents era had names like Florence, Bertha, and Gertrude. Those are pretty much not used anymore.

red-beard 11-30-2018 01:07 PM

From Tom Lehrer.

"His name was Henry, but spelled it H-E-N-3-R-Y. The three was silent"

Hen3ry used to say "Life is like a sewer. What you get out of it mostly depends on what you put into it."

red-beard 11-30-2018 01:10 PM

One of my friends has a student, Amfany. I expect it was supposed to be Anthony, which was my friend's name...

I've never known anyone with anything really stupid. I'm not sure what my parents would have called me if I'd been a girl. Maybe "Red-*****"

fastfredracing 11-30-2018 01:22 PM

Wonder what George would say about it .

Hey!

There is a family here with the last name Silva. They have three sons: Sterling, Quick and Hi-Ho. They were quite well known in drag racing circles.

flatbutt 11-30-2018 02:03 PM

How about Ivory White? He was my classmate in high school.

dad911 11-30-2018 02:04 PM

Abcde's mom may be nuts, but that gate agent is another level of disturbed, making fun of a 5yo and posting it on facebook.....

pavulon 11-30-2018 02:18 PM

It's nice that Star Wars has sort of passed. Have seen 2 Anakins and one Stormtrooper.

My 'favorite' remains Oranjello named for the gelatin served after a C-section.

disclaimer: I can't verify the last one as hard truth.

herr_oberst 11-30-2018 02:19 PM

If Abcde's parents are reading this, and if they want to mitigate any damage that this is going to cause the poor kid, try legally renaming her Absiddy; then, a long explanation doesn't have to follow each and every time some poor teacher or ticket agent or prospective employer has to read and pronounce her name for the first time.
